x'ers, why are you dying so prodigiously?

Chad Gilbert, guitarist of New Found Glory, has died aged 45

New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert has died at the age of 45, after living with cancer for several years.

The news was confirmed in a joint Instagram post by the band and his wife Lisa Cimorelli, who writes on Instagram that he passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning (September 20).

Chad had been part of New Found Glory since shortly after their inception in 1997, and his riffs helped to propel them to the top of the late '90s and early '00s wave of pop punk with hits like Hit Or Miss, My Friends Over You and Sonny. Their 11th and most recent album, Listen Up, arrived in February.

He was the vocalist for the hardcore band Shai Hulud prior to joining New Found Glory and also had a solo project in the early 2010s called What's Eating Gilbert. In addition, he also produced several albums by A Day To Remember - 2009's Homesick, 2011's What Separates Me From You and 2013's Common Courtesy - as well as H20's Nothing To Prove and Use Your Voice, and State Champs' 2013 debut The Fie

Chad was first diagnosed with cancer in 2021, undergoing surgery to have a rare type of tumour called a pheochromocytoma - which affects the adrenal glands - removed after his wife found him unresponsive in bed. The cancer returned in 2022 and spread to his spine and lungs in 2023, before he had emergency brain surgery in March to remove new tumours.

He spoke about his cancer in Kerrang!'s cover story with New Found Glory earlier this year, admitting: “I’m going through a nightmare. But even in that nightmare, there are lessons you can learn and there’s joy you can bring people. I don’t take that pain and waste it. I take it and turn it into joy.”

yes. i went back and listened to some of their earlier songs like 'dressed to kill,' and they are kind of off-putting and grating. but that's not a death penalty offense.
