If I'm touching the brakes, sure, regenerative braking should charge the battery. But when my foot is off both pedals, the car should just coast like it's in neutral. How is electricity being generated at that time?

the gas motor itself charges the batteries. don’t need to be in gear or in motion for that

No, the animation in the dash cluster shows the battery being charged from the wheels not the engine you tard. The engine isn't even running when it's going downhill. Goddamn you're stupid

park the car for two hours in neutral and see what happens when the battery charge dips

hint: the wheels don’t have to move to recharge the battery

In a gas powered car you can downshift when going downhill and barely use any fuel. The force of going downhill keeps the engine moving. You aren’t “in neutral” in an automatic or manual in that situation. Same principle in your hybrid. It’s using momentum to charge. And it takes more energy to go uphill than to climb a flat surface btw. What liberal art did you major in btw?

I know what engine braking is and it generates friction. What is generating friction that recharges the battery when I coast in a hybrid? Is Toyota capturing waste heat from the tires?

This guy gets it, but why is this better than frictionless coasting?

----

There is mild regen even when coasting (unless you actually switch the car into N) but obviously more if you depress the brake pedal.

Once the regen reaches the “off” line that’s when you know you’ve engaged the friction brakes.

I could do a deep dive into this as I find forced regen of any kind a detriment to efficiency, but I’ll suffice it to say this:

Coasting > regen braking > friction braking
