One of my favorite sayings is "beware all enterprises that require new clothes".
I know it doesn't necessarily apply to professional situations where we need a specific work wardrobe, but any kind of social endeavor that encourages or necessitates the purchase of different clothing (and not for something practical, like buying ski wear for learning to ski) is something of which I'm immediately suspect.
