The reason we have oil is because there was nothing that could eat early plants

Date: January 6th, 2026 10:45 PM Author: Orange vigorous ape i'm probably wrong about this but i thought that coal was created because the lignin created by trees couldn't decompose at that time, but that oil was created earlier when life died in low-oxygen settings. iow, there were plenty of bacteria that could have decomposed the algae and plankton that became oil but the bacteria couldn't do that in the low-O2 environments. what bacteria could not originally do is decompose lignin created by trees but that was much later in time. that's how we got coal.
the leading theory about oil, on the other hand, was that it was organic material that failed to decompose because it happened to die in low oxygen environments.
am i wrong? |
