📊 Wealth by Age: Millennials Vs Gen X

🧮 Wealth Accumulation at the Same Age

According to one analysis comparing generations at similar life stages (inflation-adjusted), Millennials had significantly more wealth than Gen X did at the same age — roughly 109% more on average. https://www.self.inc/info/generational-wealth-gap/

• Example: When Gen X was around 30–40, their average wealth was about $105 k, whereas Millennials at the same age had around $220 k.

Federal Reserve data also suggests that younger Americans (including Millennials and Gen Z) now own more total wealth relative to what Gen X did at the same age stage — about $1.23 for every $1 Gen X owned then. https://www.stlouisfed.org/open-vault/2025/june/the-state-of-us-household-wealth

These findings challenge the stereotype that Millennials are automatically poorer than Gen X was — at least statistically in terms of wealth held at a given age.

Median net worth age 35–44:

Boomers (when they were 35–44, proxied by ~1995 SCF): $101k

Gen X (35–44, proxied by ~2013 SCF): $60k

Early Millennials (35–44, proxied by ~2022 SCF): higher than Gen X at that age band

Gen x = lead paint chip generation, also coincidentally the poorest and most MAGA-friendly.

horseeeeeee shit. there's some circularity between inflation and price levels this study is obviously missing.

While older millennials had to face the ‘08 recession at the very start of their careers they’ve pretty much enjoyed incredible asset appreciation. The second recession they faced (Covid) actually boomed their assets even further. Boomers and Gen X faced wealth crushing recessions every 8-10 years in the first couple of decades of their careers. In the end boomers are doing great but during time as 30-45 year olds the US stock market and economy was pretty mediocre.

Any wealth comparison that uses "averages" is completely meaningless. The wealth distribution is so crazy that averages don't mean shit about normal people. The numbers are too skewed by that small group of extreme wealth hoarders.

Are you saying that the data is directionally incorrect bc millennials have more Inequality? Both Gens live in the same unequal society.

They seem to use the word "averages" interchangeably with median and even sum. There data is broken down into percentiles.

There really is no denying that Gen X-- the generation that gave you the 80s and 90s culture -- is the coolest gen. Wealth Schmealth.
