There's no-one even close to that famous anymore. Jennifer Lawrence came close to that status and then the pandemic happened and everything went to shit, furthering the current streaming trend. That all feels more like the Brat Pack and you can throw in Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi who both still need a major hit movie but those two have a much higher floor and longer shot to blow up bigger because the internet makes it so easy to jerk off/flick bean to them.
But the much more important point is that we went so far in that direction in music and Marvel was already a version of that in movies, so you didn’t have cool indies like in the 70s and 90s and to a lesser extent the 80s and 00s, where a young up and comer could go to get critical acclaim and build buzz and not have to carry a 200M budget at the box office. There’s just no way for actors/actresses to compete with how massive Taylor Swift or Beyoncé got. That’s to say nothing of the idiocy of reality TV stars like the Kardashians being obscenely famous or random influencers I’ve never heard of getting 20M views regularly on their stream. |
