The only reason this was a big deal was because NASA made a "teacher" an astronaut and school districts the nation over told kids that putting a teacher in space was the coolest thing ever and had planned whole units of study surrounding this objectively very lame publicity stunt. When Columbia blew up people forgot about it in a month. Were kids even sad about Challenger exploding? If I had been in school at the time I would have been happy I didn't have to spend the next month doing worksheets about space because an astronaut on TV told me to.
