Bingo. For developers the real test is handling prod issues. If you have assembled a team of shitty developers, you are going to have lots of production issues. These are immensely stressful. Every manager will try to minimize this. It makes no sense to hire subpar people. I manage systems that are used by 2 million people daily. When there is a prod issue, I hate my life. I would do anything to not have those. You are the naive ones to think managers would intentionally hire or retain bad devs. |

i am backend tech lead. i do less development now and more managing. though i still try to stay close to the code. i spend a considerable part of my day doing code reviews.
musk recently said this and I agree. when you see two basketball players, you can easily see which one is better. it's something the human brain can easily get. but this is difficult to do with IQ. every guy thinks coding - yeah i can do that. hire me! but it's not that easy. working with dumb people in this line of business is the kiss of death. if your dev cannot understand why his code is too complex, even though it works just fine in the test env, then your fucked. i wouldn't hire my own son on my team if he was a bad dev, let alone another turd. i do not want to be woken at 3am because the app went down. i plan my life backwards from there. |
