No, the flight time is recorded on the hobbs and tach, so you note the reading when you get in the plane and when you shut it down. So what's logged is not the actual flight time, counts startup, taxi, etc...

ty. so a comm'l pilot sitting in the conga line for an hour or waiting for a gate for an hour -- all that time would be credited?

and is this the same recorded time that's used for union and FAA regulations when they declare the crew is over their hours limit?

Depends if the engines are on while sitting at the gate for logging the hours. If at the gate but not started up, no. For timing out, I believe they have a max # of hours they can be on their shift, so if after the delay, the time of the flight would stretch beyond that, then they can't fly the leg.

Nope, helo was too high, outside of the helo route 4 VFR corridor, apparently helo crew were all wearing NVG which limited their peripheral vision and depth perception. Seems they had visual on the wrong airplane, and the ATC understaffing was also a problem. ATC did communicate with PAT25 twice confirming they had traffic in sight, but on the ATC track screen you can see from like 10-20 seconds before impact, there is a flashing collision alert and no one does anything. You have to think a more proactive controller might disregard PAT25 saying traffic in sight based on the radar track and direct them to adjust course to left which would have avoided the crash. It is ASTONISHING from the new close up vids that came out today, the helo flies directly into the CRJ and even at the last moment never tries to evade at all. I don't care about the sea of lights, field of vision being restricted by NVG etc...you have three sets of eyes in the helo and you're flying VFR how the FUCK do you fly full speed into the side of a CRJ without realizing it?

Military does it slightly different. They don't log startup or taxi time, just from when they get airborne on takeoff to touchdown.

Falsifying of log books does happen, with the motivation being to become competitive for jobs one otherwise would not be.

who keeps these log books? does each pilot have his own? does someone certify them?

Airmen are responsible for keeping their own logbooks. There isn't a certification authority in the traditional sense that reviews a log book an declares it legit. However, if it's discovered or there is suspicion of false/erroneous entries in a log book, the FAA can immediately suspend your licenses and refer you for criminal investigation depending on the severity/type of falsification.

they falsify the logs to actually make it less time so that they can earn more flying more hours for regional lines. the logs are recorded on software that is distributed to third party log companies, whcih are 'fly by the night' operations (haha), so you get really tired pilots calling the providers to reset the logs so that they can fly like 20 hours in a day (supposed to be 10). thats why they are always falling asleep. so yea they cook the books, but in order to give them more hours to fly. which is fine up until they fall asleep at landing.
