most other parts of the US doesn't even have a cuisine anymore. you could also argue that stuff like pintos, cabbage, etc. are now also de facto "southern" because this stuff is basically lost ancestor memories elsewhere

the question isn't what is southern food: it's what ISN'T southern food?

idk the NE has their own thing going on with seafood, the midwest likes their casseroles and things from a can, the southwest has my favorite stuff with chili peppers/corn/beans and california puts avocado in everything wow

also americans eat a lot of salad with fruits and nuts and things in them that you dont see in most parts of the world.

I would say there is an american cuisine that includes all this stuff thats more than just burgers and hot dogs. And I agree that the south incorporates it into their food

Beef BBQ is from Texas and other parts of the Midwest. Pulled pork is the true southern Q. all good food in the south is from black cooking traditions. Southern food is delicious because it is full of lard and/or bacon fat. Southern fried chicken is an example. I love belly clams and other fried foods but the southern thing is to fry them in rendered animal products instead of corn/soybean oil.

soul food largely isn't black people food, it's southern food that escaped the south because black people moved out. even shit like chitlins was eaten by poor southern white proles back in the day

not quite right, all good food in the south descends from cooking traditions that ended up incorporating elements from black cooking because the blacks were the ones in the kitchens, but most of what we think of as soul food or whatever isn't actually black, some is but not most

Southern food was served to whites but it was always cooked and almost always served by blacks unless you were poor white trash.

The Chesapeake region is the oldest part of the south and it has great southern seafood items like softshell crab, crabcakes, oysters, shad roe, striped bass, and terrapin stew.

Terrapin and oysters were served on all the finest menus from NYC south, and Maryland was the talk of the culinary world in the 1800s. Fried chicken used to be called chicken Maryland style.

New Orleans was a French territory with French cultural influences developing unique flavors.

The culture of the deep south developed after 1800 and those foods are the foods of traditional black cuisine. Hush puppies, fried chicken, BBQ. Maybe pimento cheese is a white thing, it is made with mayo.

a proper "good" pecan pie (not the basic ones that you get at large grocery stores, etc - often fancy restaurants have "good" ones though) is absolutely divine.
