this is where a lot of the extremism slipping through the cracks is coming from. there's no real credible consensus for average leftists to build under atm, and the resultant effects are causing issues for both the left and the right.

that would require a great deal of mature self-assessment acknowledging that trump is right about several things. obviously that is a non-starter in today’s climate.

yep. several elements of the then-mainline democratic social program were clearly untenable due to economic/social costs being incurred on the backs of the people and there were failures at many different points to reign in or productively channel the energies and desires of their youth wing, especially regarding the DNC's treatment of Sanders, who i personally consider to be about as milquetoast and inoffensive of a "DSA" type as there is. there's a direct line of causation between this current stuff with Mamdani (who appears to be not a real economic extremist, but likely a socio-cultural one) from Sanders' inter-party neutering.

i'm interested in seeing what Elon does with his third party idea. normally these things don't get much play in the US, but with enough disaffected liberal support it may help to realign the trump coalition down parameters that "MAGA" originally defined itself with, that blend of center-left economics wedded to a mixture of libertarian and traditional right wing social and cultural programs and policies.

in 2018 i'd agree with this, but i find the recent funding bill's priorities troubling. not at all a deficit hawk, i generally agree with the neo-Keynesian consensus regarding state deficit spending, but regarding the tax cuts (disproportionately benefiting the wealthy), the budgetary cuts to already-flagging basic social programs, and the can-kicking of public/federal land sales for short term fiscal gain, i find there to be cause for concern. there is some benefit to the political coalition elsewhere, but i see it as doubtful as to whether or not it makes up for the losses to programs that primarily benefit poor whites and the (also largely white) elderly.

if you look at actual support levels for specific policies and don't rely on (fairly worthless, especially in the US) self-reporting, you'll see that on economic matters "center-left" describes the views of the majority of the national voter-base. trump ran and succeeded on many center-left economic policy facets (and received some surprising support from major American union figures in the process). medicare is a center-left program. advocacy for labor, within the strictures of the market, is center-left behavior. social security/pension protections are center-left matters.

the majority of the democratic party's working poor/"blue" (meaning something like non-neoliberal as i use it here) middle class/what few of the traditional elites that they have left in that camp fall somewhere in this segment of the spectrum, and a sizable deal of Republicans do as well.

Policies seem fine. Would love free childcare in NYC. Daycares here are like 2600 a month for a kid.

i would consider a t1 city's popular candidate advocating for state-run grocers to be a form of extremism, at least as far as american political matters go. that said, if that's as extreme as it gets in these times, we've still got it pretty good.

there's plenty else; i'm just giving an already-debated on xo example. i don't consider it to be "unacceptable" (why would i?) when i say "extreme" but as far the record regarding the generally steady direction of US economic policy goes, it's comparatively drastic. the bearings of individual policies can be debated and fixed with nebulous political scientific precision onto a graph elsewhere; this is beyond the limited scope of my commentary in OP.

I’m in NYC and I’ve followed Mamdani. Just don’t think there are other examples. Even the grocery stores aren’t really a far left talking point.

Working class isn’t against 30 dollar min wage, fee child care, taxing wealthy, free buses, free healthcare etc.

with brevity, as i have to log off

a center-left proposal for lowering grocery prices via the mechanisms of the state would involve subsidy either on the supply or demand sides, or need-based SNAP type welfare programs. state run grocers, at a minimum, would be considered as "state capitalism" which depending on the manner of implementation could also be considered "socialist" in this context, which is far left in the US but center-left/left in the EU (broadly speaking). implementation of a general set of price controls falls somewhere in between the two as policy.

there isn't as much exactitude to where these things fall as we'd like but i think this analysis and the placements underpinning it are fairly non-controversial from a general american perspective.

and as an addendum even if some of these policies are "far left" in americans' eyes they still may be sensible and called for, depending on the locale. nyc in particular faces a set of challenges that most polities in the US don't experience, and people outside of the city should be and probably are aware of that to some degree.
