Buzz is a weird boomer fag. But he was highly influential in inventing the sound and aesthetic of grunge. Along with the Pixies and a few other proto grunge bands they really invented the foundational tone palette that became grunge. They're like a 171 for historical importance and a 140 for actual musical talent. Cool band for hipsters and weirdos and nerds but I don't think that many people actually listen to them unless you are Gen X and your whole life is grunge. They are properly rated as a Builder but not necessarily a tune factory.

your take is unimpressive

"Bonham was trained as a classical musician; she began singing at the age of five, and playing the violin at nine.[2][1] When she was 16 years old, she enrolled at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, but was expelled after three weeks for smoking cigarettes.[2][3] She later graduated at South Eugene High School and received a full scholarship to the University of Southern California for violin. After becoming burnt out from composing, she transferred to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts to study voice in 1987."

That is the most Jewish looking frontwoman in rock history. Of course signed by David Geffen. Just the tribe helping out other members of the tribe. Yeah it fucking sucks. It honestly sounds like this group wanted to be the Spice Girls and some Jewish executives were like we want you to have Frischmann sing and she's dark and moody so it has to be glum and grungy. This music can't decide what it wants to be. It's going in too many different directions. Punk, New Wave, Pop. It's all over the place. Sorry if this is your favorite record but it's not good.

You two sound like a bunch of gossipy school girls talking about some Heeb woman from the 90s who she slept with this band is mid at best and the only reason it exists is so Geffen could buy a bigger house in Malibu and bugger the pool boy and have enough for a settlement.

The concept for this band is what if you took Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots but made the songwriting substantially worse and there weren't any really catchy hits. It's also kind of charming they seem halfway between 80s glam and grunge. Like they woke up every morning and couldn't decide if they wanted to be GnR or STP. And somehow they were neither. Definitely a bridge band between eras and genres. Somehow less important than The Melvins.

Harvey Danger had One Song but it was pretty good. One hit wonders make me sad because you always have to wonder what would have been if they had TWO hits.

The Verve were geniuses whose entire career was derailed by a Jew accountant who successfully stole millions from them and I think that broke the main guy spiritually.

Verve Pipe another one hit wonder but it incredible. Sad they never got bigger they were really talented but could never put it all together.

Live - Throwing Copper is a 10/10 album

Eve 6 classic radio hit but not very influential. Semisonic did it better. Great makeout song though.

Taproot - many others did this style better but I guess if you were a Korn diehard or you couldn't get Mushroom tickets you would inevitably go see them. Probably pretty cool at the time. White rage peaked in the 90s Gen X was so scummy. This music was for seducing trailer trash white women in the 90s. Vaya con dios.

The Roots? Jfc no

The Verve is a personal top 10 favorite band of all time. But Richard Ashcroft is a total self-important knob who had some really terrible solo stuff, and was probably the inspiration for the Russell Brand's Aldous Snow character.

Cr. Most of their tracks are garbage. They got insanely lucky that they wrote one of the most famous songs of that era. Unlucky that a Jew stole all their gelt. But they never had a follow up. Big takeaway from the Oasis tour is that you gotta impress the people more than once. You know if you just do Wonderwall it's whatever but they really did have hit after hit after hit. You can't just make people cum once you have to make them cum again and again.

I'm a big fan of the songs Stephen hates the most. He was a brilliant songwriter but also a total penis who needed to be corralled. He was a total asshole who never wanted to make anything people liked. The more poppy and reasonable his songs the more I like them. Weirdness is only cool if it's contained otherwise it's just masturbation. To that end Stephen was one of the biggest jerkoffs in rock history. That being said I'm still a fan 7/10.

No concrete riffs or memorable melodies. Starting to think this era was worse than I remembered it. It just feels like these executives were throwing darts at a dartboard rather than developing talent. This group could have been something if they refined their songwriting a lot more. Not talentless but anyone hearing this up against Nirvana is gonna go with Nirvana. Ty for this obscure rec.

EDIT: when I'm drinking too much, working too much, and I just feel like slipping back easy into a mental health crisis where I seriously consider suicide or running away and living under a bridge like a bum, Rainer Maria's music feels like the devil himself giving me a warm loving hug while I self-destruct.

Far Behind is a tremendous single. If they ever wrote one other song I'm not aware of it. They were early grunge in a way that is pleasing in retrospect. They weren't trying to hard. Although due to their lack of quality output maybe they should have tried harder.

This Minnesotan had encyclopedic knowledge of their output when I met him in Thailand (or maybe Cambodia). I wrote it off as a Minnesota thing like Husker Du and paid him no mind, but he taught me a lot about kickboxing and Thai cops

They were a cool band with a lot of attitude but not too many great songs or memorable melodies. I just need more hooks than they were willing to give me.

My favorite Weezer story is one time a girl bought me a Weezer ticket and I ditched her to watch a hockey game. I never regretted watching that hockey game. She had a great ass and I wish I could still have sex with her whenever I wanted but I hated talking to her or having to deal with her. Women are 180. There is nothing wrong with Weezer per se but I have never genuinely loved them or bonded with the songs. I probably know all the hits by heart, but never from sitting down and listening to it. Just from exposure in the wild. They are simply too cheesy for me.

ive seen them twice. once was after pinkerton, it was ok but they played a bunch of "new stuff" which sounded off. next time was decades later and it was the worst concert ive been to. hockey game prob the right call, chasing pussy is for homos.

It was a playoff game. We won.

I loved her pussy but dealing with her was impossible. We had a big fight once because she said the Japanese interment camps were worse than Pearl Harbor. Yikes.

I think Rivers went to Harvard after his band got famous literally as just a flex for no reason at all. I think he was there in the late 90s or so. He just did it to tell people he went to Harvard. Not flame.

I think of Muse as two distinct bands. There is before and after they made The Resistance.

imo Showbiz 6.5/10 - This is not their best work but it's really goofy and energetic and somehow enjoyable.

Origin of Symmetry 8/10 - I love Bliss, New Born, Citizen Erased, Feeling Good, Plug In Baby, Micro Cuts. Really unique, original record.

Absolution - incredible record 9/10 even though I prefer OOS more. Time is Running Out, Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Sing for Absolution, Blackout, Stockholm Syndrome, Apocalypse Please. So many bangers.

Black Holes and Revelations 10/10 record front to back. Only 1-2 weak songs mostly all bangers.

Then the made The Resistance it's cheesy af I didn't care for it personally but admittedly there are some good songs on here. It just feels like the band changed so much and they started working with hip hop producers and shit. I began to not care about them after this. 2nd Law was not great but somehow significantly less bad that what would follow. Madness is still a keeper somehow. Then there's Drones and beyond I never listened to that crap except Mercy is a decent single but I almost never listen to it. Not sure how or why they kept going writing garbage like they did.

If you really want to contextualize it I think it's worth noting the vast chasm in their popularity in the UK vs the USA. I don't know any other band like it. Everyone in the UK knows all their shit and 2% of Americans might know one Muse song.

There is a reason for this. It's because prior to Black Holes and Revelations, their first album on Warner, their songs were not promoted at all in the US. There's a DVD of their Absolution tour where they show them going from the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury to a 200 person club in Cleveland. They had no label support from their indie label to promote their shit in the US. They first got famous in the US through Guitar Hero/Rock Band with Hysteria and Time is Running Out. But by that time Americans didn't care and never connected much with their first 3 albums. Even though Black Holes was on an American label it still took a long time to catch on. The Resistance was huge in the US though and that's when they first started playing NBA arenas and football stadiums here.

Sublime is amazing just wildly overplayed. If only 2 people knew about them it would be the coolest band ever. Bradley was a songwriting genius. But yeah they're associated with so many negative aspects of society and douchey people.

Maybe I'm just a pleb here, but I just don't like the way they sound. Sounds like fags trying too hard. They remind me of hipsters trying to be hard.

I will say, though, it is pretty LJL to play Date Rape for chicks. Played Date Rape followed by Rape Me on a first date once. It was in her car, and I made her give me her phone to play it lmao.

Wrong Way is greatest song ever written about trafficking minors. The lyrics are hilarious. There's absolutely no way libs would allow this today. Sublime makes libs irate.

You don't think Santeria is tuneful? The songs are very melodic imo.

Plenty of them are funny, that's for sure. But listening to them as a piece of comedy is different than enjoying them as music.

There was nonstop feedback when I saw them. Sounded like it was coming from Flea, but Flea seemed tuned out, almost catatonic, and the feedback never went away for the entire show. Someone in the crowd OD and fell on my feet. Pearl Jam opened but they weren't famous yet so I only remember Eddie was wearing a cast on his arm but still stage dived

a chick in college invited me over to watch their live at Slane Castle DVD and when I got there she had a bottle of red wine. I started to enthusiastically watch the DVD and she jumped on me and tried to make out with me. I pushed her off and said sorry I had a girlfriend. Years later she told me I shattered her heart and she spent months talking to her mom on the phone about me and crying. I hardly knew her. To be fair she looked a lot like my girlfriend at the time so I can see how there could have been a lot of jealousy, but I didn't really know her well and I think she pilled herself without me doing much of anything but existing.

I like their guitar and bass riffs but over time I've grown sick of the singing somehow. Also it's just too cheesy idk. I wish John Frusciante had taken his best riffs and given them to somebody else or something.

Of all the bands I really liked in my 20s this one has given me the most fatigue. I do think I can still play most of their songs by heart though. Under the Bridge is a great warmup lick that gets embedded in your fingers for life.

I literally can't talk about this band without creaming my shorts. I'm a huge fan. Obviously Chocolate Starfish was their best record. Most underrated track imo is Take A Look Around.

I will admit under torture that I think they flamed out when they put out their 4th record and the lead single was a cover of Behind Blue Eyes. That signaled to me that they were cashed. I do think Fred was the weak link songwriting-wise. I wish the other guys had done something like Audioslave and gotten together with another singer but they were all so loyal to Fred. There is only so much rapping one can take in rock and it was the end of their run. Still a fan will never cuck on my love for LB.

Lmao. Stick to TRL era music, breh. You have no capacity to rate Gen X shit. No slight against you. Youre just too young

The irony of this guy is that this entire thread is littered with incredibly obscure niche bands with only a handful of fans and the one band that makes this guy think I'm some kind of TRL normie who likes Xtina and Britney is that I didn't like Jane's Addiction? As if they are the paragon of artistic credibility?

There's also nothing wrong with liking scumbag bands like Limp Bizkit. The worst anyone can say about Limp Bizkit is that they were derivative of bands everyone agrees were good. I've been a Motorhead and Ramones fan for as long as I can remember, I've taken no shortage of shit over it ("every song sounds the same," he lisped), and I DGAF.

im not criticizing Turbo's taste at all. And upon second glacne I see the thread title is like "90s-2010 alternative".

But I read it as 1990-2000, and I think most people associate "alternative rock" with that decade.

So loving Limp Bizkit and not really knowing Janes was just a huge tell that he came of age when he did, and 99% of the bands named above he would not really know, or would google in the moment.

Nothing *wrong* with being whatever age you are. I would have to google 70s bands, or would write things like "Yeah I know one T. Rex song".

But Janes Addiction is emblematic because they spearheaded the Gen-X "alternative" moment for a few years, not least through Lollapalooza drawing connecting points between shoegazers, greasy haired grungers, rappers, etc etc. Not to mention birthing other momentous things like Lilith Fair, assorted hippie festivals, re-booting Woodstock, etc.

I wouldnt begrudge anyone hating Janes, even tho I like 3 of their albums a lot. But they must be confronted one way or another if youre writing about 90s alternative rock.

So seeing them get only a slight nod and mention of their only radio song just told me that OP came of age much later.

And tbf, old af people like me hated Limp Bizkit and Korn and such. I myself hate those bands. Im sure it has less to do with their merits as it does with age. It was what emerged when our heroes were dead or washed. No doubt hardcore Motley Crue fans fucking hate Nirvana for the same reason.

Anyway, I am not knocking OP and my post was written inelegantly. But I guarantee he didnt see high school till the late 90s. And the massive influx of alt bands in the early 90s meant little to him because of this

I have told this story before but on my way to the car I was walking alongside a couple, a genuine Chad/Stacey pairing. They were both tall and hot and dressed very preppy. And I started talking shit about Yo La Tengo and Chad got really upset and his Stacey was like THAT'S MY BOYFRIENDS FAVORITE BAND and it was adorable she was trying to protect Chad's feelings. But she was very wink wink nudge nudge I agree they suck too. It was just a funny moment.

i saw them open for wilco in 2003 and they blew wilco off the stage.

i appreciate what they did for music, but they just aren't all that good to my ears. like i said, if you took their best material, you'd have 2-3 stellar albums though.

i like that they got a blank check from geffen to do whatever for like 15 years because they found nirvana for the label.

Damn, I’m a little surprised to see this basic bitch take from you. Early Sonic Youth is the noise trimming exercise, but still has many awesome highs that are wild to consider relative to the rest of punk and alternative rock at the time, and in some cases a higher hit rate than that eg Sister is still peppered with bangers. But Daydream Nation is legendary for how it all flows together and achieves cohesion and there’s as little fat to trim as in about any landmark record of any punk and indie HOF level act.

I've always thought they were overrated because hipsters LOVE to talk about them ad nauseum. But stepping back from the pretentious cunts that won't shut up about this crap they're pretty 165. What was the sound that they directly influenced? They were the first to make like college indie rock or something? You could never get to Weezer and Pavement without this shit? I still have no idea how being a decent proto indie rock band transformed into countless hipsters entire personalities. This is just proof that so much of identity is based on the idea of something and not the thing itself. QED

Robert Pollard singlehandedly wrote about 500 catchy tunes. It's hard to be influential when you excel at the one thing every other musician struggles with. I think the real mystery is how did one mortal man write so many good tunes?

it's not amazing but it's not 100% talent free. The melodies are incredibly mediocre and not memorable but the overall mix of sounds are actually way above average. If they had written a hit they would have been really big. They had a cool tone palette but I'm a stickler for grand compositions.

The whole Stoner/Doom/Desert Rock genre can aptly be described as there were some cool guitar tones, some mostly atrocious songwriting, and if it weren't for Josh Homme lifting them all up in a rising tide probably no one would ever have heard of them. That being said after QotSA, Kyuss was probably #2 in terms of actually putting out listenable material. My Official Take is that every iteration below QotSA and Kyuss in notoriety should be vociferously opposed. Kyuss is ultimately significantly worse than QotSA and hipsters who claim to be huge Kyuss fans are trying too hard.

Really, I loved Hometown Hero and I never understood why they didn't do better. They were signed to Maverick Records, Bleeds in Blue (or another song, can't remember) got a little bit of KROQ play. I thought they sounded great and they just never did much.

Really interesting band. Oracular may be the greatest indie/electro pop record of all time. I do think that anyone who thinks Congratulations is a masterpiece is sniffing glue. They so desperately wanted to be an acclaimed artrock band, but I don't think they were very good at it. They should have stuck to mainstream bangers.

naming a genre "altnerative" always bugged me ans this thread shows why -- almost all the rock from this era is "alternative'

some with indie when that was a dominant genre and they were all signed to major labels

It is true virtue all rock from the 90s is alternative, unless it expressly sounds like classic rock. There was a major shift in tone across the board. The difference between classic rock and alternative is very noticeable. Everything from Chuck Berry and the Doo Wop era in the 50s up until The Pixies and the Melvins and what would become grunge is all under one banner. Even New Wave is classic rock. But nothing that came after Nirvana can be considered classic rock, hence the reason we have words for this binary schism. Why does this bother you?

Indie is a subgenre of alternative that is simply less aggressive.

of course i understand the differences between the genres and their origins. what bugs me is that the descriptive nature of the word themselves no longer applies.

alternative became mainstream. indie bands often arent indepedent. i like nonsense words like rap, ska, jazz, rock, etc. that aren't independently descriptive.

well we've already got grunge, emo and others as subgenres so alternative has to be a broader scope. ill go with "millennial rock".

The success of the term alternative is precisely because it's so broad. Millennials came into alternative about halfway way through its arc. It was started by young boomers and Gen xers and was in full swing by the time Millennials got to it. So that's just inaccurate. It's called alt because the stations that played it were the alternative to stations that were playing Poison and Def Leppard. So it's still the most accurate term we have.

it was at its apogee immediately before and after the millenium. millennial refers to the time period, not the generation of the same name. like midcentury modern furniture. which remains popular, but it's forever associated to the time period it wqs dominant.

College rock was probably a better term.

The Minutemen, Replacements, That Petrol Emotion, etc. were not getting played on AOR stations in the 1980s.

But in the 90s you could hear some of the bands above on stations like WMMR (Philly). Others not so much. I don't think rock radio was playing Yo La Tengo or Guided By Voices.

Alternative Country is a legit genre, however.

Jayhawks, Silos, Uncle Tupelo, Hayes Carll, Old 97s, Drive-By Truckers/ Jason Isbell, Bottlerockets, Jason Molina and associated acts... Lost track of the genre a little while ago though. If you want to go way back, Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers.

This is so interesting to me because I associate an entirely different group of bands with Alt Country. I think of Texas Country and Red Dirt. I know Hayes Carll and Jason Isbell but not familiar with the others. Feels like a totally different genre than what I think of as Alt Country imo but maybe your definition is closer to reality than mine.

Mine is more early 90s focus when it became a thing.

Uncle Tupelo begat Wilco and Son Volt-- I think they were the seminal band that prompted journalists to start using the term alt-country.

i thought about that but it's not as irksome. nothing can be "new" forever so using it as a genre name comes with the knowledge it won't be "new" forever.

i don't think the "alternative" name would have stuck if people thought it would become the dominant flavor of rock for decades.

This is a tough one. I would say they're somehow both properly rated and overrated at the same time. They started off as a popular boy band that got really famous for looking cool and being from New York. I think largely as songwriters they were not the best. It was a lot more about the fashion and the identity than the music.

However, they were one of the biggest rock bands of their era and they did have at least one massive single. They were not completely talentless hacks. They just didn't write a lot of great songs and were always more famous than their actual output.

Still they deserve consideration and I believe that they will get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame based on their fame alone.

A very enjoyable song I will never remember 5 minutes from now. This guy sounds exactly like Chris Martin. I think they should have gone for a softer sound and not had heavy guitars. This could have been a pretty good pop rock act. I definitely would have produced this record and told them to be poppier. I don't think they have heavy rock in their hearts. They could've been a lot bigger.

She has her own really distinctive taste in everything. She's not trying to impress anyone or assert her views as superior. She's just a unique special little snowflake who can't help but inject her oddball personality into everything she does. I found it quite endearing.

Loser is a great single but I otherwise thought he was completely overrated. I fully subscribe to the conspiracy theory that his success is entirely due to his connections in Scientology. I don't think I have ever heard anything he made after Loser that was relevant and he won the most prestigious Grammy award for a record no one listened to. I am full tinfoil hat on this guy. Either that or I just don't get it.

I did however used to party a lot with these staggeringly rich Filipinos that lived across the street from his house. And everyone would go see that, that's Becks house! It was a pretty nice house. And those parties were awesome. Sobriety is very 120.

I like it, it's kind of mellow. I think they should have had a better drummer. It's pleasant but not extremely memorable. They should have pepped up the rhythm section.

I was a bigger fan of Des Kensel and only like Matt Pike for his tone, which comes from his fatass fingers. I saw HoF right after Des quit (during COVID) when they had some literal gay dood filling in, and it was sad. They had him behind a curtain where you could barely even see him.

Anyway I didn't see you mention Sleep alongside Kyuss

He's still respected. They replaced him with Coady Willis, not some rando, because they knew if they didn't get someone legit the fans would be pissed. Des only quit because he had shoulder and neck issues, really sad but when you play like that it I guess it's a risk. He was like this live

Combining shoegaze and metal was a pitchfork critic's wet dream. My main question though is how do you afford real estate in the Bay Area when your most famous song has only been spun a million times? The record is alright and worth listening to at least once but probably not a lot more than that. I could put this on and not hate my life entirely but it's terribly niche. A generous 7/10

I was a really big fan. Their first two records were fire. I remember playing Lazy Eye in a guitar shop once on some guitar off the wall and a kyoot hapa hipster chick was floored. She ditched her boyfriend to cum watch me strum it and was in awe. This guy got really jealous and huffed and puffed. Or maybe I'm remembering it wrong. Maybe he was playing Lazy Eye and I was just flirtin' haha who remembers?

I also liked Swoon I thought it had 3 great singles. Panic Switch was really peak alt rock/pop. But my favorite track was Substitution. Just really liked his strained voice and the melodies on this. It's also a captivating, unusual melody. Brian really knew how to write a banger. There weren't many alt rock bands making big hits in minor keys with heavy guitars at this time. They owned that space for a while.

But Neck of the Woods was a let down and you could sense it was the end of Great Songwriting. I couldn't listen to that record and I felt like the jig was up. I don't know what they've done since then but I think they just disappeared.

CR.

I think Neck was pretty good but still a step down from the prior stuff. The albums after that were poor and only had a few interesting songs.

Still a fun band to see live.

I am pretty sure this is a Scandinavian pop band. If they have any rock songs I've never heard 'em. But going outside the premise of the OP here, Lovefool is undoubtedly one of the greatest pop songs ever written. And I think you'd have to be insane to disagree.

They were your favorite angry white man's favorite angry white man band.

They blew people away with "OMG white people are doing blues records now! Whites have SOUL!"

I think ultimately they were properly rated as a niche blues rock act with a cult following but I can't put them higher than that. The songs never struck me as anything I'd want to go back and listen to on repeat in the long run.

I never understood what they were doing. But I respect the hell out of em. It always seemed like they were really talented and intense and way better at guitar than anyone else. I just have never really listened to it. They've been on my list bands to sit down and discover for a long time. But I don't think I actually like it. I think they got 10x more famous when their guitarist got murdered. Also they apparently owned a strip club or something. They were party animals have to respect it. If I liked their tunes more I'd be a bigger fan but too much shredding goes way over my head. I can't listen to endless soloing. Still they're somehow on the Mt. Rushmore of Metal. To be clear, I would probably put them below Slayer.

One hit wonder but it was a great radio hit. That song was fun when it came on and you were drunk with your friends. I knew a lot of guys growing up who got extremely jealous and stalked their girlfriends all the time and when Sometime Around Midnight came on it was always entertaining. Somebody always had a crash out as Zoomers say.

Did you know that guy practiced law before he did music? He quit law to start a band. You can still maek it!

Kurt was a genius of geniuses. He was one of the most creative people who ever lived. He didn't just write songs he created a whole universe. He didn't just make art he lived it. I don't think he ever wrote a single song in a major key. He may have written the most negative hits of anyone in history. His entire discography is a downer and I don't think people bring that up enough. It's extremely unusual to almost never write a song in a major key and I can't think of another artist who did. In Bloom is almost in a major key but it's not, really. Kurt had the most negative energy of any star ever. And he wrote so many hits it's insane. Almost all of his songs are famous classics. What more can be said about him? He was a very weird guy and his death launched him to another level of infamy. He wasn't playing the same game as the rest of humanity.

Pixies were great they were the first band to write pop songs with a grunge theme. They will always be the first movers in grunge pop. But in the long run they weren't incredible songwriters. They should be in the rock hall of fame and it's stupid that they're not.

Pearl Jam is one of the greatest bands ever to write almost entirely in 1 4 5 progressions. Nearly all of their songs recycle the same chords over and over again. They were brilliant tunesmiths and deserve a lot of credit. But they also took the grunge sound and turned it into really cheesy pop music. They are sort of like The Eagles or something. I personally can listen to it but would often prefer not to. I'm not a hater but also not a die hard fan. I think they add something to the overall tapestry of grunge. What would life have been like without Pearl Jam? They will always just kind of be there in the background, for Gen Xers to delight over. They also have REALLY LONG INTROS.

tyft on pearl jam. ive always felt like some sort of hipster contrarian among grunge fans for thinking they're just ok. like a food critic who orders well done steak. like i get their contribution to the genre. im not a music scholar so i could never put my finger on why, but your scholarship makes sense because they do "feel" like the eagles of grunge to me. it sounds manufactured and eddie vetter always sounds like hes overacting to me. like william shatner where an over-the-top parody is impossible.

pixies is tragic. they came a little too earlier and wound up getting chewed up and spit out by a record industry that was still demanding timely records regardless of quality. frank black is a genius but also an egomaniac so it didnt take much pressure for the band to collapse.

if you haven't watched it you should check out the doc on them. the other two members aside from kim are complete goobers and lucked assbackards in rock history. one was working as a magician/ventriloquist before they reunited lol

I did see the doc it was pretty sad. Agreed the guitarist was a no show but still has one of the most famous riffs in grunge history.

To be clear about PJ they are extremely talented and they were very creative within a limited canvass. They could write hooks for days. But they did nothing but cover the same territory over and over. They're not bad at all, but they do have a lot of haters because how many times can you listen to the Same Song.

A Gen Xer I know loves PJ and The Eagles as the greatest ever so it makes sense that they would appeal to the same types of people. A lot of professional musicians hate on PJ though because it's a really limited box of tools to draw from.

OK 1 but there's still several blue notes and he's toying with dissonance. Even still he wrote about the same ratio of happy songs as The Beatles wrote sad ones.

Never cared for it personally but it was significant in its day. Cult following. Nothing else sounded like that. No one else was doing emo vocals over folk music.

I will never say anything bad about the OG victim of the MeToo movement, and for being the first to stand up to it. Rest in power, king.

Dizzy: My mother always told me that litigation doesn't solve anything.

Jean Rasczak: Really? I wonder what the founders of Napster would have to say about that.

[to Carmen]

Jean Rasczak: You.

Carmen: They wouldn't say anything. Napster was destroyed.

Jean Rasczak: Correct. Needless litigation has resolved more conflicts throughout history than any other factor. The contrary opinion, that litigation doesn't solve anything, is wishful thinking at its worst; people who forget that always get sued.

Song 2 is one of the greatest pop rock songs ever written. It's a song that when lesser bands (Image Dragons) play at their show it's the best part of the show.

That being said most of the rest of their stuff was twee and not very good. If you listen to their other hits they're not very good. Beetlebum, Park Life, Girls and Boys.. These songs kind of suck. They were primarily super famous for being young and good looking in the UK at the start of the Britpop craze of the 90s. They were a boy band and not very talented.

I think Damon redeemed himself with Gorillaz though and showed he could truly write well when pressed. In some ways he surpassed Graham and the gang. Bottom line Oasis mogged the shit out of Blur.

One thing a lot of people don't realize is some bands get really huge just because the members are really attractive. And it skews history and people's memories. Being Hot is a huge advantage. So when you say how good was Blur do you mean how hot were they on magazine covers in the 90s? Very. But their music was mostly pretty bad.
