Right now it's the IK Multimedia One. I am not a mixing and mastering MFE. I usually pay someone else to do that. But I try and mix a little as I go so I can hear what the hell I'm doing. In today's home producer economy it's essential to mix as you go, so layering in sounds should always slip right into something that's on its way to becoming its final version. The One makes everything extremely loud and it only has a couple of buttons. It's good for demos. Better to be overly loud and work on the shittiest of phone speakers than be too quiet for anyone to understand what you're trying to accomplish.

I am such a control freak that even though I don't really know how to mix I send mixing engineers a sample mix to go off of. My #1 complaint is when other people have their own ideas. I am expressly against anyone else having any sort of personal opinion or creative control of any kind so when I collaborate I refer session players and engineers to my examples so they don't start thinking for themselves. The biggest thing that will ruin a project is a lack of vision. In essence, having taste and a concrete vision of any kind is the most essential production skill. I may not exactly know how to cut together 4 different guitar tones with unique individual EQs into a single composite but I can at least point to a track that already exists and tell a producer or an engineer, hey, this is the sound I'm going for. Essential skill.

Nice I’ll check that out. I’ve been using the mastering assistant in logic pro that came out like a year ago.

Yeah I’m controlling too. Control over the vision is what makes being in a band hard. Lots of artists painting on the same canvas.

Bands stopped existing a long time ago and it begs the question were there ever really bands? Kurt Cobain just showed up and presented the songs to the other guys. One was his best friend who had minimal talent and was along for the ride, and the other guy was a drummer who was hired cash money from the record label after the group was already famous. Plus he was generationally talented and impressionable and easygoing. So yeah there were hardly ever any bands even back in the day. If you find 4 other guys who just happen to have the same vision as you, you're from another planet and not dealing in reality.

Almost certainly not. According to Wikipedia rock music died in 2010. People don't listen to new rock music anymore. You might have luck in a subgenre like active rock, metal, or country. You would have to become really famous and it's better if you're a singer with a pretty face. Someone like Morgan Wallen "plays guitar" but he's more of a singer and a heartthrob.

I prefer AddictiveDrums. Easier to use, more variation. Ironically both companies are Swedish for some unknown reason.

From what I can recall 90s effects processors were not good. I already have a computer I don't know why I'd get a decades old computer.

I'll tell you which way the industry is going though. Everyone is gonna go to plugins. Every pedal and effect company is going to make a plugin version of their effects. Everything is going digital. Every pedal that exists will become a plugin if it hasn't already.

I just listened to a demo. My first thought was woah, that sounds incredibly close to Joe Satriani. Then I fast forward a bunch to the other sounds. They all sound like Joe Satriani. I give this unit the Joe Satriani tone of approval but fairly limited use case. Fact I can really only think of one.

P bass for tone. Equally as good is the J bass. I also like Stingrays for extra punch. They're pretty much all good. There's not a big difference between models. I probably like the thinner neck of the J bass with the tone of the P bass. For certain styles you need a Stingray though.

Nothin against it. It's a damn fine guitar. Damn fine. The tone is bright and sparkly. Use case is going to be clean tones, indie rock, surf rock, and vintage applications. Not that you can't turn the gain up to 11 and rock out. You can. You can pretty much do anything on any guitar. It's got a cool vibrato bar that adds character. I probably wouldn't get one for metal. If I had one I would get one with the rhythm circuit just for the novelty aspect, and then I would tell people who had Jazzmasters that don't have a rhythm circuit that they aren't real Jazzmaster players for maximum snobbery. If I'm gonna get a funky guitar I want all the quirks and novelties. Get one with binding and a headstock that matches the body. Go all in and tell everyone you're in a surf band called The Magnetoes. I don't know. Do whatever you want this is guitar advice not life advice. Poor one out for grandma. Or don't. Tell em I sent you.

for shoegaze you will want a guitar with humbuckers.

A lot of those shoegaze guys used a Roland JC 120 and a fuck ton of effect pedals (example - this is Neil Halstead of Slowdive's current pedalboard that he largely uses with a JC 120 - https://spaceecho.chromewaves.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/slowdive-pedalboard-1-1024x1024.jpeg )

A JC 120 is huge and more amp than you need.

I have been very very happy with my Line 6 Helix modeler - it has endless effects and even models obscure pedals and amps and shit. People really like the Axe FX, Quad Cortex, etc even the Headrush. You could even get a Line 6 Stomp XL that is far smaller than a regular Helix but has all of the same effects and amps etc. Not much you can't do with one of these.

Then get a PA speaker to play it through. I got a specialized Fender modeling amp made specifically to play modelers through and it rocks (and looks like a fender amp)

Disagree. There was a major renaissance between 1997 and 2005. Some of the greatest rock albums ever made came out during this time. But they are not widely recognized as great. I think for rock to remain strong you need a large fanbase of well off middle class white youths. As Millennials aged out of their peak creative years and were replaced by Zoomers, the appetite for complex, depressing music faded. If you are in any way drawn to music that's focused on negative emotions such as anger, rage, sadness, hopelessness etc then I think the peak period was probably around 2002. I predict that in a hundred years some future society will rediscover this era. To wit the main reason classic rock has hung on for so long as the most popular rock genre is that it's peppy and eternally upbeat. In a sense, it's just glorified pop music. Alternative on the other hand is rock in its true form, expressing emotions that cannot be adequately expressed by other genres.

Superstrats in general are cool. I don't know if I'd play one that looked exactly like Eddie's guitar. I'd probably get a Charvel. I wouldn't want to identify too heavily with someone else's guitar. I think it's lame to copy other people too much.

Do you mic a live amp for guitar or use virtual stuff

Both. The trick now is to get composite tones. Virtually all hard rock tones consist of multiple layers of tones.

I have gotten great tones from micing an amp and I have gotten great tones from an amp simulator. I will say that with the simulator it's a lot faster to dial in something that works. With an amp you have to play around with it a lot. Amps are a lot like sorcery. It's more like casting a spell. You try stuff and just hope it works.

The one thing I can do better with sims is make guitars that sound really punchy in the mix. Real amps don't naturally sound punchy. They're ultra compressed and just sound very uniform, like someone with a monotonous voice. With amp sims you turn a few virtual knobs and you can get a really exciting punchy sound that cuts through your mix. So hopefully some day I figure out how to do this with a live amp. I have tried lots of production tricks to achieve this but I haven't cracked the code yet.

I actually deeply fear upgrading anything. When studio time matters stability is the most important thing. Upgrading shit normally comes with a big crash that can ruin your entire week. Everything is unstable and sucks. It can take an entire day just to get all of my plugins to work which randomly stop working all the time. So upgrading software is like pulling the pin in a grenade. Don't install anything new but once a year when you can afford to troubleshoot.

Never tried it. In my opinion if you're running into a high gain amplifier, most fuzz pedal sound exactly the same. I don't fret much about the type of fuzz pedal. They all do the job.

I think a lot of the classic tones people chase were just people using whatever they had around at the time and it wasn't super cerebral. Musicians write songs and make it records and decades later some people on the internet obsess over it. But they were just doing whatever sounded cool on that day.
