From what I can hear the controller himself did nothing wrong except follow a bad procedure.
Controller probably has the latitude to deviate from procedure if it's erring on the side of caution, but it's understandable why he didn't if allowing visual separation is standard for that area. |

Date: January 30th, 2025 11:55 AM Author: The Soo CR National Champions JUGGERNAUT Seems to me if he had seen the conflict further out he could have given the helo a heading to fly to have him pass behind the CRJ, even if his initial instructions were maintain vis and pass behind once he saw the helo had vis on the wrong aircraft, had not altered his path and was on a collision course with the CRJ, he should have told him to immediately turn to a new heading. It apparently was SOP to maintain visual separation but having that many jets coexisting with helos, at night when it’s easy to lose the lights in the sea of DC or as here ID the wrong plane…it’s just reckless and it didn’t have to happen.
