Starting to get around some retired people and realized that most of them are just quitters. They could be working.

Society pushes this idea of retirement but nobody actually wants to live that way.

society doesn't prepare people for early retirement, so you kind of have to figure out what to make of it on your own, which seems to be the hardest part. a family friend retired at 40 and is the happiest person i know, always busy with interesting projects, following his passions, helping out the community, staying in great shape, etc.

It’s almost as if work is inherently unpleasant, and only the most dire necessity would compel people to do it.

cr. that's why it's "work" and most people need an incentive like "needing to do it to survive" to do it.

once the cost/benefit of that favors not working most people won't do it. there are some psychopaths that will do it for the love of the game, but most of them have tied "work" to their ego and self-esteem and are incentivized their self-worth being tied to work.

I notice most of the time it’s short men who no longer wish for their height to be ridiculed in the town square. Tall men never retire.
