The Space Race was really a competition against the Soviet Union, after Sputnik spooked the shit out of America and they feared Soviet supremacy in space. Space projects had massive public interest, investment and will. This culminated in the moon landing with America as the definitive 'winner' of the Space Race.
From 1969 to 1972 we landed on the moon several times. By the early 70s, the public had become almost bored with it as it had become routine.
We then began to explore reusable space planes via the Space Shuttle in the 80s but it never achieved the level of interest as the Apollo program of decades earlier.
Maybe when a private corp like Space X builds permanent space habitations interest will pick up again. Space X has had monumental achievements, but how much does the public really pay attention to it or appreciate it? They think Elon Musk is a Nazi or something.
