Both the prolonged absences of a king and the fact that David had to earn his title are offered as evidence against the divine right of kings. Pretty powerful stuff. |

They said "Adam was an absolute monarch, and so were Adam's sons, and I can trace my lineage to one of Adam's sons."
Locke was saying hey look at King Fucking David. By the time he became King, he had all kinds of IRL achievements under his belt. He never said "I inherited this from God." So I don't think Locke's reading is orthogonal to yours at all.
Locke also psychoanalyzes God a bit. He says that at the time God was giving Adam "dominion" over certain things, he was pissed off and cursing Adam out, if anything. God certainly wasn't in the mood to do Adam any favors. |

Locke could only write in English to his audience was limited from the beginning, and no one though highly of him in Germany while he was alive.
In England and America it was a different story, since we were already native English speakers. We couldn't read Latin as well as we could read Locke. |
