They want control over the security channel plus having some push notification is easier than making every prole generate and type in some generic six-digit code half of them won't be able to figure out how to do it. Agree it is kind of weird they don't force you to turn it on, but also they use all kinds of risk telemetry and device fingerprinting to flag unusual login attempts.

This bullshit where they text your phone a code is a weakness.
Put one on your keyring, stick the other in a safe deposit box.
