Seen it five times and would watch it again right now. Even 50 Cent has a good performance. And there's new layers I catch each time.

Screenwriters obviously studied Heat and reconstructed the elements (out of control cop, hero bad guy, interesting crews, big set up to the score, clever heist, big action to close out movie). But it really works. Surprised there are no threads on XO about it.

1) the fat guy who was the rat spent way too much time in public meeting with russel crowe and his crew. seriously he's with marsoc marines or army rangers in their hometown (pablo's character played football at a high school in the police district) and then dips out to meet with cops in a tailor's store for 20 min?

2) those guys were hanging around the treasury building too much to contradict the parking lot scene where he said don't get near the building or we'll be identified.

3) the shootout at the end....they already did one bank robbery like 20 min prior to the escape. how would LA only have one detective team for a reeanctement of the west hollywood shootout? there would've been military vehicles clearing the highway a half hour after all that shooting and explosives between the decoy bank and the treasury building and then the highway traffic finale.

overall it was okay but not memorable and not close to the gravitas or action sequences of heat.

1) Merriman told him to

2) they stayed in the parking garage other than ice cube going in as cover; I run and workout near my fed reserve bank so I think they hyped the security; they also planned to get made

3) yeah, L.A. was a little sparse on cops, but worth it for the action

What's a better Heist movie since Heat?

Good entries, The Way of the Gun is one of my all time favorites.

Still way more metaphorical than Heat with "Parker" and "Longbough"

i loved way of the gun but i can't rewatch it. too many slow scenes with juliette lewis. the introduction with sara silverman and the last 15 min are the greatest parts of the movie and make it a true classic of early 2000's.

Longbaugh : I've... never killed a man.

Interviewer : I beg your pardon?

Longbaugh : I said I never killed a man.

Interviewer : I didn't ask if you had.

Longbaugh : You asked why I thought I was qualified, I think of that as qualification.

Interviewer : And I'm just wondering why that in particular strikes you as an important qualification for semen donation.

Longbaugh : I would say thats a big fucking qualification - excuse me, a very important qualification.

Interviewer : No one's ever said that before.

Longbaugh : Have you ever asked?

Interviewer : No.

Longbaugh : You should.

Here are some other "best heist movie" since Heat:

-Inception

-The Italian Job

-Triple 9

-Out of Sight

-3 Kings

-Ocean's Eleven

-Contraband

-Brooklyn's Finest

inception was a "dream/metaphysical travel" movie that happened to have a heist theme. i don't like its inclusion here.

triple 9 was very underrated. ocean's 11 was more of a cat burglary type movie than a heist per se. them dressing like cops to take the money was the closest they got to a shootout.

Most Hollywood screenwriters agree there are only 9-10 different types of movie plots. Inception inarguably goes in the "heist movie" bucket. Inside Man is another good one I left off.

Eternal Sunshine is considered in the "out of the bottle" archetype:

The 3 elements of Out Of The Bottle are:

1) A wish asked for by the hero or another, and the clearly seen need to be delivered from the ordinary.

2) A spell, which we must make logical by upholding “The Rules.”

3) A lesson: Be careful what you wish for! It’s the running theme in all OOTB’s. Life is good as it is.

You are thinking of the "Buddy Love" genre which Eternal Sunshine has elements of and is (perhaps intentionally) disguised as:

The 3 elements of a Buddy Love are:

1) An incomplete hero who is missing something physical, ethical, or spiritual; (s)he needs another to be whole.

2) A counterpart who makes that completion come about or has qualities the hero needs.

3) A complication, be it a misunderstanding, personal or ethical viewpoint, epic historical event, or the prudish disapproval of society.

A lot of capeshit movies are also dressed up heist movies, like the revamped X-men movies with all the British actors. That magician movie with Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman is also a heist movie.

New observation. The complete shit show that is the first heist at the donut shop raises the stakes enormously. These guys are completely capable of fucking up and there's no expectation that any of the rest of the movie will go smoothly.
