give him the classics and weights, encourage learning something remotely practical, and see to it that he's socialized well, and as long as he's not totally dumb he'll figure something out. it is still possible for intelligent and attractive young people to have fun in youth and they will naturally be optimistic. you're speaking from the position of a tired wagie, as a smart and attractive and personable kid he will feel like he has infinite possibilities. in fact part of your job is not letting your tiredness rub off on him, and to the extent that you feel like you've made mistakes to guide him against those.

DESCRIBE the scenario? I'm definitely promoting religion because it provides a framework and a built in social network. If I tried and my child just hates it and is a stone cold atheist then I would obviously have to work with it but it would make life more challenging for sure.
Motivation obviously goes beyond religion. There are losers in every religion. Hopefully you develop drive and ambition and get them into a good crowd and put them into good schools. Also develop natural curiosity.
