To be entirely fair, you can still get a degree at a state school for like $40,000 a year which is much more reasonable.

At $40k per annum, I’d need just $640,000, minus the $194 k we have already saved, and that’s like $444,000 over 20 years or $1,850/month.

I meant you'd help them find their first job and acquire some tools. When they're ready, you help them get a work van and more tools, set up their website and basic accounting and payroll, to start their own business. Once they're good at both the trade and the business side, maybe you help look for acquisition or expansion opportunities. Help them own their own shop and fleet.so that they can control overhead and weather any lean times. And, that way when they're 55 and their knees have gone and you've got a foot in the grave, they're basically on cruise control as an owner and not a doer.
