The problem is that freely given, undischargable student loans inflated the price of a college degree exponentially. Get rid of the student loans, or at least change the terms so they are dischargable, and the colleges will be forced to adjust accordingly. Sadly there will probably be a decade or so of unfairly screwed students as colleges consolidate, but eventually your left with a fairer system that is almost certainly better at its basic task of educating students. Lenders should be able to adjust rates based in student potential. A stem major going to MIT shouldn’t pay the same rates as someone getting a gender studies degree from a directional state university.
Also it is preposterous that colleges refuse to become more efficient in the information era. With the Internet, AI, video recording, etc., these schools should be serving much greater populations for less money. There should still be an in-person opportunity to go to Harvard, but they need to push online extension school as a less costly and less prestigious (but equally viable) option. We also need a post-SAT aptitude test where young job applicants can be better benchmarked against each other. |
