My current job is fine, but I think I could do better. I got an offer for another in-house job that seems generally comparable to mine, except it pays 20% more. I planned on taking it, but one of the other attorneys let slip that they offered the job to someone else a few days ago, and he/she declined the offer. Should I do the same?

The fact that it's only 20% more money is part of the hang up. An extra 20% isn't that much. I could probably get that much (or more) at another job at some point in the next few months if I keep applying, I don't mind waiting, and I don't want to start this job as (a) their second choice or (b) if there is something about it that the other candidate saw that I don't.

Of course there will be better candidates for any job. It's that, are there negative aspects of this job that the other candidate discerned that I haven't seen? And will I be behind the eightball in terms of how I'm viewed, given that I'd be coming in as their second choice?

Whose taking it personally? It's a matter of calculating if it's worth it to jump for a moderate--but not great--increase in comp when they might be less than totally enthused at my hire, there might be something about the role/team/company I'm missing, and I could probably get another offer that's as good or better if I go through more months of job applications and interviews.

If you apply soon after the job is posted, go through the interview process pretty quickly, and receive an offer during or very soon after the last interview, it's fair to assume you're the top candidate.

What does how competitive the role is have to do with it? And in any event, ITE, most decent in house roles are very, very competitive. Posts on LinkedIn show 100 applications through Linkedin alone within a couple days. This one is especially competitive because it's well paying.

The bottom line is it's only 20% more total compensation than my current job, and that doesn't seem like enough to justify the move when factoring in the fact that someone else turned them down for this role.

Who cares? Almost every job I’ve ever gotten I’ve been pretty far down the list, and every single of them has ended up great for the employer and everyone quickly realized what a great choice “they” made. Interviewing skills are just all about likability over a 30 minute cold call. Totally different skill set than actual work. I don’t blame people for preferring to go with the cute chick with big tits.

Either (i) the person came off as better for the job in 30 minute interviews that had nothing to do with the job - in which case, who gives a shit or (ii) the person had a way better resume - in which case, who gives a shit.

Interviewing is beyond stupid. You should save these slights for promotions or shit whree the people actually know you.

you know, I think you do step into marginally higher risk in a situation where you're second choice vs first. that said, there are so many unknown variables - eg it could've been an influential person at the company who preferred the other candidate, and it turns out you won't actually work with this person much anyway. once you're on board it's unlikely they'd cut you to find someone they like 1% better or whatever, and you'll show them you can do the work.

if you're excited about the company, 20% is still a fine raise.

is this remote or in person, are you changing cities? and out the approx comp, is public or private stock a meaningful part of it?

Not remote. Similar number of days in office and commute as current job. Both are "hybrid" and in the same city.

Current job is $250k base, $300k total. New job would be $250k base, $360k total. Stock is a bigger part of the new company's comp. It's a big, public company.

Thanks. I understand your reservation about this new piece of information. But after thinking about it another day, I wouldn't let this stop you from accepting it. You already must have had good reasons to look for new jobs, interview, get the offer, etc. I'd prefer Alexandra Daddario or whatever, and I shouldn't tell my wife this, but it wouldn't stop me from being in a healthy marriage. (I'm single you you get the point)

No because it doesn’t mean people had reservations about you. Can often mean there was a big time stud they were hoping for but he turned them down for Wachtell/Blackstone/Meta

Now if they took 6 weeks to get back to you, yes avoid. Someone didn’t like you.

What do you mean about taking 6 weeks to get back to me? Why is that a sign of someone not liking me. The whole process was much longer than that:

Week 1: Apply

Week 4: Screener

Week 6: Interview with hiring manager

Week 8: Interview with several team members

Week 12: Interview with Deputy GC, get offer, learn that they had already offered someone else who declined, presumably between weeks 7 and 11

Other than the gap between week's 8 and 12, nothing seemed particularly slow.

This is dumb. There are infinite nonsensical reasons why they picked the other person over you.

Like maybe she had nice breasts and the guy making the decision liked them, and she declined because he was creepy (i.e. short). This means nothing with respect to you and your success in the role (unless you also have nice breasts, in which case post pics).

It would be very cucked to take the job under these circumstances. You will always be resented as a reminder that they missed out on their top guy
