Walked past it on my way home—the old church, charred beams reaching into the night like broken fingers. A man lay on the steps, wrapped in a filthy blanket, his face turned away from the world.
I stopped, just for a moment. Watched his shallow breaths, the rise and fall of someone who had nothing left but rest. It looked peaceful.
Thought about waking him, offering a few bucks. But what would it change? Nothing. So I just stood there, wishing I could lie down beside him, let the city swallow me whole.
Made it back to my apartment, sat in the dark, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.”
