Here I am again. Cowgod. First semester of the LLM in Sustainability, done. The days went fast, like water through cracked hands. I’ve walked this road before. Econ. JD. MBA. Always the same end—OCI, the corporate cattle call. PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Skadden, Lightfoot, McKinsey. Names like storms on the horizon. And me? I’m the ship that never makes it to port. Sustainability is a strange word. It stretches itself thin, trying to hold too much. Save the trees, build the towers, feed the world, grow the profit. Can we even do it? Or are we spinning plates, waiting for gravity to win? The law tries to keep up. It draws lines on a shifting map. Renewable energy deals, carbon markets, rights for those who have nothing left. It’s a game of rules no one understands, least of all the players. The professors speak like prophets. One talks about green finance like it’s salvation. Another digs into the bones of drowned villages, the cost of progress buried in mud. I take notes, but the questions pile up. Bataille whispers in the back of my head about waste. Illich shakes his head at the machines. I wonder if they’d laugh at this whole thing or cry. OCI is coming. Again. It sits in the corner of my mind, a weight I can’t shake. Will it be another failure? Another story of almost-but-not-quite? Or does it even matter? Maybe the ladder isn’t mine to climb. Maybe the ground is where I’m meant to stay, watching the world build and break around me.

What’s the point of all this? Degrees and interviews, the endless race for a purpose no one can name. Is it all just noise? Or is there something beneath it, buried deep like roots in the dark? I don’t know. The semester is over, but the questions aren’t. So I keep going. Step by step, through the fog. Maybe the answers will find me. Maybe they won’t. Either way, I’ll be here, grazing on the edge of meaning.

Sustainability Law is a burgeoning field, and it’s easy to see why. The cracks in the world are growing. Governments scramble to patch them, and lawyers are the ones handing out the tape. But this isn’t just environmental law with a shiny new label. It’s bigger, messier. It’s about systems, not symptoms. Climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequity—they all tangle together like roots in bad soil. And the law has to find a way to untangle them or at least keep them from strangling us all. You can feel the tension in every seminar. The optimism of clean energy advocates clashes with the cynicism of those who’ve seen too many promises broken. There’s talk of circular economies, closed-loop systems where nothing is wasted. But then someone brings up the mining needed for all those batteries, and the circle doesn’t seem so clean anymore. You wonder if sustainability is just a prettier word for survival.
