30:00 What Schmid does not tell you, is that Africa is not as most people in the US believe it to be, and it is also changing rapidly. While the US (and Europe) kept Africa poor (o yes it/they did) while draining its resource, China is actually investing in it and more and more African economies are growing and flourishing compared to before. Obviously, I can't speak for China's intentions and long term plans with this, but their investments are reshaping the African continent. Something similar is happening in south east Asia. In other words, the global south is no longer the global south that the US exploited. It is being reshaped with Chinese investments.

The interview itself is pretty boring because Schmidt operates on an entirely secular materialist domination frame, but there were a couple of interesting moments:
10:00 he calls Henry Kissinger his best friend (lol).
15:00 Schmidt says he can determine the technological state of a country not by talking to politicians, who either don’t know or would lie, but by asking very precise, specific questions to prominent engineers within that country. By doing this he was able to determine that China was two years behind the U.S. in the AI arms race.
31:00 Schmidt says a very interesting thing: that in a democracy growth is necessary because growth has not been claimed by entrenched interests yet; in this way oligarchs can seize the growth and direct it to their own ends.
