There were 2 or 3 months when Turo profit covered us our payments for the car, which we were really happy about. However, the positive experience ends here. Every other guest kept scratching the car and refused taking responsibility for the damages. Every time we had to deal with Turo insurance and pay $250 out of pocket, which basically meant that guest pays us for the trip and then, most of these money went to out of pocket payment. This kind of car is usually rented for 3 days on average, so the payout for the trip is not huge about $170-350. Basically, every time we repaired the car we lost money and time when the car was in the body shop.

Turo refused our preference to rent out car to 25+ years saying that our car does not fall in the category luxury, which was annoying but we let it go and decided we are okay. The problem emerged when the car was not very well rented and we had to decrease the price to $95 a day (minus insurance and we only get $60 a day profit), when we set price this low we had 21 year old teenagers renting the car. When you have 21 year old driving rented Porsche you have it all: smoking in the car (you can’t prove it oftentimes as it’s just the smell), stretched car, extremely dirty inside (we tried to charge cleaning fee through Turo but were refused a few time and then stopped trying), excessive speeding at ALL TIMES, we were so concerned one time that we called Turo and reported the speed of 150 mph throughout a day, but they said they can’t do anything if there were no accident yet.

The end point for us was a damage in the interior of a hook that covered cup holders. Basically, a little door that hid cup holders wasn’t closing after the guest. The guest offered to glue the hook with instant glue (ridiculous!) and refused to pay for the repair. We proceeded through Turo and they refused to pay for it indicating it is not a damage it is normal wear that they won’t cover. So, we paid over $600 to replace the broken detail and none of it got covered by turo. We got $270 from that guest’s trip and paid over $600 to repair his negligence.

We don’t see the point of renting our car through Turo. The only one who makes money is Turo, we could barely cover the half of monthly payment for the car on average. We just kept paying for the repairs loosing money and time on it and every time teenagers take your car, you pray that they don’t crush to death as they have no idea what they’re doing.

No, REITS are passive income. Screening tenants, dealing with tenant bullshit, hiring contractors to do repairs, taking TSINAH to court-- all of that is a part time job, pal. No landlord ever has just rented out a place to trouble-free tenants and had the money roll in.

These redditors would be better off taking a part time job at an actual car rental agency but then they wouldn't be "entrepreneurs" so no go on that front.
