Jesus thought you had to raise the goat yourself, but to the temple authorities that was like trying to bring your own popcorn into the movie theater. Even worse, Jesus was probably telling other Jews that God wouldn't accept the goats they had just bought. There was more too it, but that was the dispute that touched off the fight. After he was killed so unceremoniously a lot of Jews probably reflected on the situation and thought maybe Jesus had a point.
