you always want to have some herbs and spices mixed in for flavor and medicine. that includes garlic. rosemary plants will eventually grow into big sturdy bushes which produce way more than anyone needs. hot peppers will kind of do their own thing in the background; you can stick them near tomato plants and they seem to get along fine. chives are good fun and possibly even good for you. catnip can be added to salads, which is something no one ever does (but you could).
but be cautious about mint. that shit is kind of a weed. it will colonize empty space and root itself more deeply than you'd either expect or desire. and bamboo is the devil. you will never get bamboo to stop shooting itself up through your yard if you dare to plant that shit.
