Under no circumstances should you ever take statins even once, I am deadly serious about this.

i've been a statin skeptic.

but isn't there some logic to the idea that atherosclerosis cannot advance in the absence of cholesterol?

they are overprescribed. but meds clearly work for high-risk people. the mortality reduction is greater when your risk is higher it seems.

all superb. tris are 50.

the thing that got me is stratospheric LP(a), which no one started testing until like 10 minutes ago.

genetics pwned.

Age? What’s your Lp(a)?

Mine was 305 nmol/L but my CAC was 0.

mid 40s. slightly higher than yours - but I was told risk is not linear. once past 'moderately elevated Lp(a)' it's all similar risk.

I remember your case from another Lp(a) thread.

the drawback with CAC is that it only images calcified plaque. people < 55 normally have little to no calcification yet, but many have tons of un-calcified 'soft plaque', which is more lethal because it can rupture and form clots.

my 'blockage' is non-calcified plaque. in 5-10 years, it will calcify and begin to appear on CAC scans as calcified. but in the meantime, the CT Angio allows it to be imaged in pre-calcified form.

even if you don't get a CT, I would recommend a Thoracic Echocardiogram (no radiation) at some point, because there is a strong established relationship between Lp(a) and aortic stenosis.

I’ve tried to stay knowledgeable about heart health for over a decade now after my dad had 5x bypass surgery at 55 (but he was actually an outlier in his family for heart disease and he’s never had Lp(a) tested). I know Lp(a) is genetic so I just control what I can.

i'm just going all in on crushing LDL. started 5mg of Crestor 4 months ago, bumped to 10mg. first month, I had muscle aches and headaches, but they completely vanished. zero side effects after the first month. don't even notice I am taking it. going to add Zetia or try to get insurance to cover PCSK9 (which also reduces Lp(a) by 30%) to nuke LDL to <45 - 50.

i'm pretty convinced by the available information that this will arrest atherosclerosis.

it is what it is. there are people who have been on these meds for 35 years and the alarmism seems slightly overblown/dunning kruger to me.

I took a statin for almost a year and it wasn’t for me. Crestor 10mg then tried 5mg. I ended up with serious memory and brain fog issues and bad lethargy. That all went away as soon as I stopped the statin. I’ll take my chances trying to do everything else I can. I would encourage you to read anti-statin stuff just to be fully informed. People on Reddit etc. love to repeat Peter Attia and tell others to “nuke” their LDL and Apo-b, but many of the studies they rely on have serious flaws. Good luck.
