EA launched EA Advertising, which promises brands can enter games in a “non-disruptive” way. Incredible phrase. Non-disruptive like a billboard in your soup. The State of AAA: first the shop tab, then the battle pass, then the brand-safe stadium objective presented as immersion.

EA says brands can appear through in-game challenges, reward-driven objectives, branded content, ad boards, scoreboards, broadcast overlays, targeting tools, and Frostbite ad tech. The game is no longer a game. It is a mall with collision detection.

Capcom is removing Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Deluxe Edition and a pile of microtransactions from sale ahead of Dark Arisen. Rare good news, but also funny in the way a burglar returning your toaster is funny. The monetization was bad enough that subtraction now looks like generosity.

Removed items include Rift Crystals, character-editing junk, wakestones, portcrystals, and other little tollbooths of inconvenience. This was always the humiliation: make friction, then sell grease.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said YouTube monetizes Xbox better than Microsoft does. The State of Xbox has now reached CEO-level public self-own. Twenty-five years of Xbox and the punchline is that reaction channels may be better at extracting value from the brand than the people who own it.

Nadella also said Microsoft has subsidized Xbox entertainment and needs a sustainable model. Translation: the green box is beloved, expensive, strategically confused, and standing in finance’s office without a chair.

Xbox’s problem remains Games. Not vision. Not ecosystem. Not hardware innovation. Games. If the explanation of the console is longer than the list of things you need to play on it, the console is losing the room.

Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake metadata reportedly said “stunning visuals, updated designs, and timeless gameplay,” then changed. “Timeless gameplay” is either reverence or a warning label. Switch 2 needs Games, not just a museum placard with antialiasing.

Nintendo Direct was reportedly the most-watched Summer Game Fest presentation, peaking at 3.8 million viewers, beating SGF’s 3.7 million. Great. Everyone watched the incense ceremony. Now release the Games.

The Ocarina trailer was reportedly the most-viewed trailer of the SGF window, with 115 million views. This is Nintendo’s curse and weapon: the old relics still summon the crowd. But a $450 box cannot live forever on childhood smoke.

Today’s release calendar: Mole hits PC. That is basically it. A small animal in the grass. June 15 belongs less to new releases than to demos and industry embarrassment.

Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online gets a PC demo today, with PS5 and Xbox Series demos following late tonight / tomorrow. Anime RPG demo day. Acceptable. At least it is a thing you can play, which already puts it ahead of half the “future of gaming.”

Game Pass removals today: Jurassic World Evolution 2, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Warhammer 40K Space Marine: Master Crafted Edition, and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. Subscription gaming giveth, subscription gaming quietly takes your little shelf away.

Price Watch: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is $39.99 on Steam today, $49.99+ on Xbox with Game Pass availability, and $47.99 on PlayStation. The AA witness remains useful: prestige ambition without the full hostage-exchange smell.

Price Watch: Silksong remains $19.99 on Xbox and broadly $19.99 across the major platform story, with Game Pass availability still part of the Xbox angle. The tiny prosecutor is still seated. Every $79.99 AAA object with early access, fake coins, ad integrations, deluxe slop, and a shop tab called The Armory has to explain itself.

AA remains the missing middle. Capcom accidentally makes the case today: team-based development can work when the result is craft, not spreadsheet mush. Huge Teams are not the sin. Huge Teams making Huge Products at Huge Prices with no soul and five currencies are the sin.

Indie remains A Reprieve. Not pure. Not holy. Often twee, derivative, and Discord-poisoned. But still capable of being a game before becoming an advertising surface.

The Absolute State: EA wants brands in the walls, Capcom is removing tollbooths, Xbox is being out-monetized by YouTube, Nintendo is selling incense for a new box, AAA is Huge Teams making Huge Products at Huge Prices, AA is the missing middle, and Indie remains A Reprieve. Gaming is Grim. Today it is also sponsored

It’s just going to be OK imo. Like I’m hyped but my actual experience will just be “it’s not the same 😔 “ and “I don’t give a fuck about cutscenes.”

Cutscenes are so weird in general, I’ve never seen anyone say they Like them but they have so much influence on review scores and if a game has a bad “story” it gets Skewered.

I wasn't impressed by the Ocarina of Time trailer. Maybe I'm just too jaded by those Unreal Engine mods on YouTube though.

Ocarina of Time is a triumph iirc and due to N64’s lack of install base and complete Failure and loss of that Gen, there are many who still haven’t played it.
