I'm just gonna say it FF8 is chronically and severely underrated.

i really like the more mature art, the story (once i was old enough to understand it), setting, music, etc.
the draw system and world leveled enemies really hamstring the game. if everything was the same and they used the materia system it would have been much better. it's a wonder why any game used leveled enemies and/or grinding resources after this, but both became fairly common in RPGs immediately after. i guess as open world RPGs (despite this being very linear) and MMOrpgs became possible it presented problems that these things addressed. but i hate it.
if it was just a FF7 fundamentals with ff8 plot, graphics, etc i think it would have been much better received. i can't judge it objectively because it's extremely nostalgic, but i still like it, although having replayed it a couple times it's easy to see why it flopped.
