Wrote a fiction novel. Writing, revising, tweaking was great fun. Cold query letters to agents…not so much. Sending out cold emails to agents as a straight white male with a literary fiction novel with a straight white male protag and masculine themes…lol. Got a couple of full send requests, “best” feedback I got ranged from “I like this, but it’s not commercially viable in the current environment” to “men don’t read books unless they’re crime books, go back and weave in a crime angle and bring it back to me and I can sell it.”

Find major agencies and then read through agent bios and try to find anyone who reps your genre, seems like they might click with you, repped comps, etc…good luck though. Almost 100% of NY lit agents are militant putple haired shitlib Brooklyn lesbians. Trying to find a straight, white non-soy male is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The way most people get it done is by ingratiating themselves into the scene, sucking off the right people and getting pushed by the “right” people. Hanging out w those nerds and pretending to like them seems worse than never getting published. There’s a resource I think called queryshark(?) that sorts also but it’s often way out of date and you need to double check.

My protagonist is female but pretty hetero conservative themes overall. There is precisely zero chance I will network to achieve publication.

I guess maybe I can send a sup on linkedin. That would be me at the very top of my networking game.

also, tyty, this is actually helpful

Are you a male writing a female? That is prob gonna be appropriation to these ghouls. Without some sort of academic tie in and in person glad handing it’s unlikely. This is an incestuous scene they want to push their “friends” and the vast majority of cold query letters like unsolicoted resumes are never read and certainly not replied to.

Different agents request different formats for queries so theres no one answer. You can try to write authors but it’s unlikely they will reply if you don’t know them. They also won’t send you to their publisher it still has to go through an agent. I ended up with 2 NYT best selling authors I got to through connections, both loved the manuscript and brought me to their agents and recommended they take me on. Died on the vine for reasons noted above both times. Have to remember in the end it’s a business and agents care about $$$ not your art and agents are mostly dumb cowards and losers who chase the last trend instead of trying to nail an outside the box win because if they color outside the lines and the book bombs they may get fired. They want safe, familiar and like a recent best seller.

I don't think my writing is all that outside the box. If your book is that different, have you ever thought about self publishing? You're way ahead of me in the effort you're putting into this. I'm in "I'm willing to send a few emails and see what happens" mode.

Self publishing seems like a humiliation, wsnt DAT BIG 5 preftige, also to sell a sel published no name book as a first time author youd need to do a huge amount if legwork to get reviewed, drive online sales, get social media exposure etc and I want zero part of that. Maybe TRUMP will make publishing great again.

Why don't you adapt it into a screenplay? Weirdly it seems way easier to get a screenplay optioned nowadays if you're willing to blunt force it to as many eyeballs as it takes, and then reverse engineer that into a published novel

lots of poasters here focused on getting published through a traditional route

in this era, imo, if you're doing to do something interesting -- which is inherently going to be anti-establishment and edgy -- you're probably going to have to self-publish

arx-han wrote an awesome book called incel and had to self-publish it (https://www.amazon.com/INCEL-Novel-ARX-Han/dp/B0CJLCZVCG )

it's basically as good as american psycho, or close to it imo

he has been building his audience via word-of-mouth with regular substack posts and it's working out for him: https://www.decentralizedfiction.com/

the thing is marketing a book is a totally different skillset than writing one, and both are equally important. there's no easy way to success, it's a grind that takes a lot of work

anyway i highly recommend incel if you decide to read it

it's niche enough that the specific topic could out me, but within the world of philosophy. i just started working on a proposal in earnest this past semester (partly, i was too drunk or dead before then) and still have a ton of work left. the bigger problem in my case is that the dissertation was too sprawling because i was attempting to be exhaustive and demonstrate my rigor at the expense of utility. long footnotes. very long footnotes. tracing out a new, more useful focus has been a different sort of challenge and i don't think i would've been able to start it well before i had this long distance from the younger project. killing your babies is easier when you didn't put >80hr weeks into them for years.

Try writing NOFOOTNOTE. Make a bold claim you're prepared to back up, but don't cite any authority. See whether you get called on it. If you do, no big deal, add the footnote. But you won't.

I know maybe 5 or 6 people who have published books through traditional publishers.

Two are rich lib yoga white women with nose piercings. One wrote a sob story about an immigrant family. The other wrote a chick-friendly book inspired by the death of her father. One of them got some critical praise, but neither seems to have been a "hit." These kind of people get more book deals because the book audience looks like them these days.

One is a black guy who writes in a genre that is traditionally very nerdy. He has a legit following but being "diverse" was his hook even though he went to top schools his whole life.

Two are white males. One is a former military guy who wrote a book that sold decently well and was optioned for a movie. But it was a personal story and a one hit wonder. The other only got his book deal because he's a close relative of a major literary darling.

I also know two rich white chicks who have kids and self-published books while being SAHMs for a period. They are probably the best-written books out of this list and I wouldn't be surprised if they ultimately made the same amount of money as the traditionally published books.

To have any real success today, you need to have something that's going to get snatched up for some netflix bullshit starring Nicole Kidman or Reese Witherspoon.

I know a woman who made a living writing inserts for drug manufacturers to put in on the labels of OTC meds. You know how sometimes there's a big ass label that folds out with all kinds of instructions on how to take the medicine and side effects and shit? You could go to Walgreens and buy something that had her original writing inside of it. She did one for Tylenol, the actual brand name.

Aren't those mostly copy pasta? I'm more intrigued with how they actually design the paper so it folds up properly once printed. I tried to lay out notecards so they would print 6 per piece of 8.5 x 11 paper (with different fronts/backs) and it took nearly all of my considerable mental faculties.

The more basic shit was copypasted, but the pediatric doses always required all kinds of instructions. Sometimes the companies would make these kits with tylenol and a packet of rehydration salts and some tissues in a little tin. Sometimes there would be a little opening statement that tells you what the kit is for. Some of her work product was really good.

written three novels in SF/F, couldn't get an agent with any of them. trying to write a fourth that is more commercial and hookier for the audience, which is lib white women agents - that said, as a white guy I have no hope anymore. I have no connections in the industry, don't have a good lib backstory, and don't have it in me to tailor my writing for the market

to be honest the whole process has totally blown out my holds. I'm so cynical and jaded and depressed re: the industry now that it makes me refrain from buying any book that's less than like 50 years old. I would never recommend any white male write a book or engage at all the publishing industry, it's a huge waste of time and you're basically just kissing the asses of people who resent you

This is what kills me. The industry believes “men don’t read,” I challenged an agent and asked so men not read because they don’t want to or because you don’t publish anything that appeals to them? Her eyes glazed over and she repeated “men don’t read, they watch sports.” I am confident if they published books for straight white men, they’d buy them. I’d love to read new releases but every fiction book that comes out is gay lib trash or a poorly written woman’s rape fantasy. Bring back Fitzgerald, Hemingway, fuck even early less gay Ellis or 3rd tier similar guy like McInerny, just something that isn’t about homos and or minorities and stupid lib themes. As the guy mentioned above, half the shit that sells now is 3rd grade level retard writing but A WOC IS SPEAKING! LISTEN UP WHITEBOIS!

I have submitted, but not been accepted. I've tried direct submissions to publishing houses and also submitting to agents. Writing is a passion of mine and it's a life goal to get something accepted/published and to hopefully find an audience. I've accepted that I will likely have to wait until I've retired from the rat race / raised my children to really, really give it a go. But, every so often I get the inspiration and I write/submit. So that's the context of my experience.

In my observations, the publishing industry is more or less controlled by coastal liberals. The kind of people who regard it as their life missive to 'boost' the stories of the 'historically marginalized.' It's a very bad era to be a straight white man that is just trying to publish a good story. It's just not what they are looking for. For example, I sincerely doubt that 'The Count of Monte Cristo' would be picked up today.

If you look at the publishing houses that will accept submissions direct from writers, or agents who are accepting submissions, they almost always tend toward marginalized topics/writers. Look at this, as one example:

https://writingcooperative.com/10-agents-looking-for-science-fiction-now-f7b634936c53

9 of 10 are women, and most are looking for middle-grade or young adult stories. There are several references to wanting diverse or female protagonists and wanting settings/themes outside of the medieval or European fantasy standards. So even if you took this all to heart and wrote a compelling story about an gay teenaged woman discovering herself in a fantasy setting inspired by Indian / Chinese / Korean / Japanese mythology, you'd still have no chance because you'd just be an interloper. You don't have the bona-fides. It's an industry where victim hierarchies and intersectionalities actually matter.

Some would say that it's just a response to the market. And while it's true that historically the MG/YA genres sell better, and adult women read much more than men, these measures have skewed very hard in the past 20 years because of the content published.

I realize that this will sound bitter/jaded/jealous, but I've read some of the current popular fantasy/science fiction out there and it's all just terrible. I just hate it. So many plot holes and contrivances. Just ridiculous, ridiculous shit where the reader should be like, 'there's no fucking way this would happen' etc. A lot of open focus on female sexuality too. And yet, this is the stuff that flies off the shelves at Target and goes high on the Amazon lists.

Anyway. That'll be it for now.

It takes me on average about a year for a novel. That is at a pace of 500-1000 words a day, plus 1) planning, outlining, 2) about three rounds of edits, and 3) life getting in the way and the occasional lapses of motivation.

All three novels I wrote while I was in some way or another working full time, but not biglol levels of demanding jobs. You just need to clear about a solid hour a day and be serious about that time - having it consistently cleared and not wasting the time when you have it.

If I had infinite time to write I’d still probably do a book in a year, but it would be higher quality

My favorite authors all went to jail, and were only able to write during narrow windows of time when they were given that liberty. Sometimes they had been let out of prison, but circumstances were so fickle that they could end up back there any give time. So they had to write as much as they could, right now.

The best authors also had limited media to work with. Ancient Chinese texts are a lot easier to understand and aren't full of the customary bullshit we encounter in western texts, because the only long term storage media they had were small bamboo slats that could be assembled into "books" of only 30 slats.

The Mayans let their script do a lot of the talking. The way you wrote the script reflected your views as much as anything you were saying phonetically. You couldn't be a great writer unless you were also a great artist, with a distinctive style of writing anyone could identify.

But writing itself it TTT as a form of knowledge preservation. It was only developed as a technology for administrative purposes. For the first 500 years we had writing, no one even recorded the genealogy of kings, let alone any sort of religious or "popular" text.

Instead knowledge was preserved - and preserved better - through oral traditions, using song, meter and rhyme. You can teach a kid to sing a song a hell of a lot easier than you can teach him to read and write, and he's gonna remember those lyrics better than anything he reads in a textbook or the Bible.

How about a law treatise to savor those sweet treats of scholarship?
