Stopped Payment On $100 Check For Shady Prole Goy Sprinkler Guy

these irrigation guys and want like $100 for a "sprinkler assessment" and dont give free estimates. found a guy who had fabulous good google reviews and nextdoor reviews, and figured what the hell can i do.
he comes out and basically just counting sprinklers and then gives us an estimate on the spot to replace every single sprinkler head and rotor, and do no other work. he was charging $15 per sprinkler and $25 per rotor, which i later determined to be like a 100% markup.... plus 8 man-hours of labor (2 guys x 4 hrs). total is $1600
gave him a $100 check on the spot. that afternoon, i did some research and called sprinkler stores for prices and also talked to our lawn guy who said his prices are highway robbery and changing out every single sprinkler even if they're not broken is a waste. then decided to stop payment on the check.
got another estimate today from a guy i used at the old house, and guy said only a few sprinklers need to be replaced and more work needs to be spent moving them around to better places, and said he could make the system way better for like $500.
haven't heard from him yet. should i proactively tell him, or wait for him to contact me?

i told him he's entitled to nothing and there's no basis for a lien for giving an estimate and doing no actual work, and if he attempts to put a lien on our house we'll defend ourselves to the full extent of the law and pursue all available counterclaims and damages.
so he writes back saying it's unethical for me to use my letterhead (i just have my name and esq attorney at law) to threaten to sue him, and he's gonna report me to the prosecutor's office and the state bar (even though i'm not even a member of the are country state bar) for handing a fraudulent check unless i pay up.
i said i didn't threaten you, you threatened me and i said we'd defend ourselves. i said i'll agree to pay your bank fee of $35 as full and final settlement and put the settlement language in there, please respond in 2 days if you accept otherwise no deal ever.
never heard from him again lol.

several other reasonable estimates all told me it's retarded to install all new sprinklers when most of them work, and they all proposed the same solution -- replacing the broken ones, and moving around a couple of them that are in retarded spots. a sprinkler is a sprinkler. there's no reason they all need to be the same brand. |
