That’s the whole story. Everything else is rhetoric layered on top. The “$450 is unaffordable in 2025” argument is a cope dressed up as economics, and it collapses the moment you stop treating vibes as data. Median household income is materially higher now than it was in the mid-2000s, unemployment is low by historical standards, GDP is enormous, discretionary tech spending is clearly alive given PS5s, GPUs, phones, subscriptions, $70 games, controllers, headsets, the whole stack, and yet somehow this one box is framed as a bridge too far, as if Nintendo alone has discovered the outer limits of consumer solvency. That’s not how affordability works, that’s how value perception works, and confusing the two is either ignorance or dishonesty. In real terms it is easier to buy a $450 console today than it was to buy a $299–$399 console in 2006–2008, when median incomes were far lower and then promptly fell off a cliff during the Great Recession, and yet the Xbox 360 and Wii didn’t just survive that period, they thrived, expanded the market, and embedded themselves culturally because they were legible upgrades and legible propositions. People were poorer then and still showed up because the pitch made sense.

What’s happening now isn’t that people are broke, it’s that they’re selective, and selectivity is fatal to a product that leans on brand inertia while asking near-premium money. If the economy were the binding constraint, PS5 sales would crater uniformly, PC hardware wouldn’t rebound, $1,000 phones wouldn’t move units, but reality keeps interrupting the narrative. Consumers are clearly willing to spend; they’re just not willing to spend on a sideways move priced like a leap. Nintendo defenders respond by abstracting the failure into macro forces because micro analysis is unkind: the Switch 2 is priced as if novelty were infinite and competition were optional, while delivering an experience that many people already approximate or exceed with hardware they already own. During the Wii era Nintendo sold obvious difference; now it sells reassurance, continuity, and vibes, and then acts surprised when reassurance doesn’t pry people off an installed base that still performs better.

The goalposts shift predictably: power doesn’t matter until price does, price doesn’t matter until sales don’t, sales don’t matter because Nintendo “plays the long game,” and at no point is simple misjudgment allowed to exist. But markets aren’t sentimental and they don’t care about corporate mythologies. A five-year-old console outselling a new one is not an economic mystery, it’s a revealed preference, and invoking housing prices and inflation as a talisman doesn’t change that the same consumers are buying plenty of other expensive toys. The uncomfortable read is that Nintendo mispriced and mispositioned in a moment when the old anti-power, anti-competition logic no longer auto-wins, and instead of grappling with that, the discourse pretends we’re all living through 1932. We’re not. People aren’t refusing to buy because they can’t; they’re refusing because they don’t see the point, and that distinction is exactly what the fan narrative is trying to erase. QED.
