By all accounts Iran's entire military-industrial complex has been completely destroyed. You don't just rebuild weapons industries overnight, even with increased oil revenue. And they will have to spend a lot of money on things like IRGC and other regime buildings after pretty much every major one in the country was destroyed.

Still probably a strategic win for Iran as things stand now, but this war has definitely hurt them badly.

as long as Iran says it will fire on tankers Hormuz will remain closed and the US will be humiliated. even if Trump sends in the Marines and declares thereafter that the danger has been eliminated, all Iran has to do is hit a single tanker with a drone to demonstrate they still have the capability and we’re back to where we started. the only way out of this to get Iran to agree to a ceasefire and it doesn’t look like we’re anywhere close to that happening.

I expect China and India will persuade Iran to cool it with the Strait blockade eventually. They need oil not only from Iran but also from the Gulf states and not at some huge price increase.

Even if that's not certain to happen, it's a lot more likely than the US being able to force Iran to do it militarily.

I could see iran doing that but that only helps those two countries. if it remains closed to most traffic that’s still a huge problem

US victory is no longer a function of the decimation of iranian military-industrial complex as long as they can keep the strait closed, and sadly the closer the regime gets to a truly existential moment the more incentive it has to be aggressive in keeping it closed, asymptotically up until the point it ceases to exist. becoming increasingly hard to envision a "good actor" stepping in a la venezuela. but who knows, at some point it becomes a matter of personalities and internal intrigue to which none of us are privy.

its only a strategic win for iran if the diplomatic and economic pressure is long lasting. the material costs were negligible production adjusted

the US hasnt really been doing a good job wrt making its case to the world as to why all of this is happening; i sort of follow it, without much interest, and i don't really understand the causes of the recent struggle other than the greater israel angle

It's more like Trump is fucking up the dynamic the intelligence community has been trying to foster for decades. Iran as a bogeyman is good for the US. It scares Arab states into siding with the US and further justifies keeping US military personnel in the region. And as we're seeing, Iran was pretty weak. Nowhere near as bad as their saber rattling.

Iran will come out of this completely annihilated. They might keep the same regime etc but they will never touch a nuclear bomb and it will be a decade before their own military infrastructure is back online. Without that threat will Arab oil states want the US around? Will they still hold their noses and tolerate cooperation with Israel? US will find a new bogeyman by then...
