essentially, the hero and your entire party fall in battle to the lord of shadows and the world is ruined and your party is scattered. one party member is the hero's grandfather and the former king of a great kingdom that was destroyed by the lord of shadows long ago. he wakes up alone and broken in the world of ruin, and seeks his old martial arts master to learn skills with the hope of taking on the lord of shadows himself. but his master tests him by plunging him into a dream world in which his kingdom was not destroyed. what's more, he is surrounded by his loved ones (who of course were not slaughtered in the invasion) as well as by rulers of other kingdoms who all come together to throw him a surprise birthday party and praise him for his wisdom. the hero, his grandson, is a young boy and grew up unharmed under the king and queen's loving care. when the hero trips and falls and drops the special slice of cake for his grandfather, the grandfather suddenly realizes that he and the hero fell in battle against the lord of shadows, and the hero is likely dead. rab decides that he has to leave behind this perfect world where his daughter and son in law and loyal servants are alive and well--where his grandson has known no suffering. he bids farewell to his grandson and to the world he once knew and completely accepts his reality.

My most purely emotional JRPG moments were probably sprawled through FFX. The World of Ruin was also pretty gutsy and Ruinous, especially at the beginning. Iirc when the yellow raincoat guy died and left that note it was more impactful than Aerith. JMO, ymmv.
