U.S. students' math scores plunge in global education assessment Ivana Saric Data: OECD; Note: Reading scores not available in 2006 due to test booklet printing errors; Chart: Thomas Oide/Axios U.S. students lag behind their peers in many industrialized countries when it comes to math, according to the results of a global exam released Tuesday.
Why it matters: U.S. students saw a 13-point drop in their 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) math results when compared to the 2018 exam.
The 2022 math score was not only lower than it was in 2012 but it was "among the lowest ever measured by PISA in mathematics" for the U.S., per the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) country note.

Math proficiency is 4% (that's 10 kids across the whole school, 2-3 in the senior class). Reading is better at 28% and science at 11%. 25% attempted at least one AP test. 0% passed. Average ACT score is 18.3 (I suppose only the smart kids take it). Even more shocking is that it's not the worst in the state: only 249/362. It has never been an academic powerhouse. I remain the only National Merit finalist ever to come out of the school. Someone else did get a commendation letter once. However, it seems like in my day (all white then) everybody could at least read and do basic arithmetic. Enrollment has shrunk as all the parents who can afford it are driving their kids 30 miles to private/religious schools. Locals are trying to get a Catholic school going. Insurance coverage was not enough to rebuild it, so they proposed a bond issue which the voters rejected. Fortunately, they got a FEMA loan which was forgiven.
