AE was a topic, just like fused suits were a topic, to establish a base level of acceptable dress for not being prole. In the former case, it meant having leather soles and the option to refurbish them as needed, though woe be unto those who chose blutchers over oxfords. Of course, those with wealth would choose JL or EG over AE. But at least you weren't a prole with AE.

Aldens are miles better than AE. they look better (although this is subjective) but more importantly are MUCH better quality. i've had pairs of AEs fall apart after 3-4 years. have had Aldens for 10-12 years that are still in excellent condition, i just have to get them re-soled sometimes.
