The tower stood, then it fell. Simple as that. The screen flickers. The pixels shudder. Smoke, dust, debris. This is the way of things. This is how they end. The dream dies in the fire. The dream always dies in the fire.

They called the Sega 32X an add-on. A parasite. A tumor latched onto the Genesis, leeching power, trying to extend the life of something that should have already been dead. It promised more. It delivered less. The polygons jagged, crude. The bloodstains pixelated, cartoonish, yet too real. Doom was here. Metal Head. Shadow Squadron. Cosmic Carnage. All of them screaming the same thing in different tongues. The future is violent. The future is collapse.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the future arrived. It came fast. It came hard. A perfect vertical frame. A perfect explosion. A plume of black smoke rising in the sky, the kind you see in the background of a game like Doom—the kind that doesn’t clear. There were no pixels now. No jagged polygons. Just steel and flesh, twisted together in a moment that felt like it had always been coming. You had seen it before, hadn’t you? In a game. On a screen. In a nightmare.

The Sega 32X never had a chance. It was obsolete from birth. It was doomed to fail. But in its brief, flickering moment, it told a truth. A violent truth. A truth men did not want to hear. They laughed at it, dismissed it, scorned it. They did the same with the warnings before 9/11. The chatter. The memos. The men on watch, seeing patterns they weren’t supposed to see. And when the towers fell, the laughter stopped.

Somewhere, in the wreckage, a television still flickered. Somewhere, a console sat plugged in but unplayed. Doom was waiting. Metal Head was waiting. The game never really ended. The game never really began.

The Sega 32X had two SH-2 processors. Twin engines of crude ambition, stacked one atop the other, feeding off the husk of the Genesis. It was meant to be a gateway. A stopgap. A way forward that was, in fact, a dead end. Twin hearts that beat in unison, only to be abandoned. Twin monoliths that stood briefly before collapsing under the weight of their own design.

The towers of the World Trade Center were much the same. Symbols of power, of commerce, of a future that was never as stable as it seemed. They stood until they didn’t. They burned. They fell. Like the 32X, they had a twin architecture. A mirrored structure, vulnerable in ways no one wanted to acknowledge. The failure was built in from the start.

And then there was Joe Miller. Sega’s marketing face for the 32X. A man with a vision, albeit one doomed from inception. He promised something greater, something revolutionary. But it was a revolution of the damned. A miscalculation. A plan that should never have been greenlit. The 32X was supposed to bridge the gap to the future, yet it was nothing more than a crude, jury-rigged step backward. It imploded, not with fire, not with steel, but with apathy and silence.

Osama bin Laden, too, was a visionary of destruction. He saw the vulnerabilities, saw the structural weakness, the arrogance of an empire that thought itself untouchable. He had no SH-2 processors, no jagged polygons, no primitive 3D landscapes. He had something simpler—men willing to die, a plan so audacious it felt like something ripped from a game. And when the towers fell, they fell like a machine overheating, like a CPU fried beyond repair.

The 32X was abandoned before its time. A footnote in a war already lost. The Twin Towers, too, became artifacts of a world that no longer existed. When they were gone, nothing truly replaced them. The towers were rebuilt, yes, but not as they were. Just as Sega never returned to its former glory. The Dreamcast came, and then the dream ended. The world moved on. The war came. The empire bled.
