if you ever go to an ultra rich place, boomer couples who accrued 5-10 mil over their whole careers are the NPCs of the billionaire class. Imagine being so rich that when you walk outside the "doorman" is a guy who owns more than 99% of people. That's how the ultra rich views the UMC. If Bezos and Zuckerberg could go to a Starbucks and get a cup of coffee, their ideal barista would be a 65 year old man who had had a very successful career in tech or finance serving them. Wealthy boomers are the service class of the elites. They're minimum wage employees by comparison, the same way an actual service employee is to a UMC retiree with 5 million NW.

The wealth of someone like Musk or Bezos is truly staggering beyond imagination. They could drop $100 million for a mansion or a jet and it would be like the average person losing a penny.

This is flame though. It's not like losing a penny to them. It's like losing 100 million. The richer people get the more they covet and respect money. They typically have much more respect for money than poor people do. A prole loses a penny and doesn't notice or care, a billionaire loses 100 million and 50-100 people have to get fired as a consequence. It's completely different.

no way. they are worth like 200-300 billion

100 million is 1/2000th-3000th of their net worth and they'd have to pay tons more on taxes and maintenance. that's a lot more than a penny to most people.

They also have a lot less liquidity than people assume. They’d notice because they’d need to take legal steps to unlock enough liquidity to make such a purchase

nah I don't think it's totally like this

you don't come across self made millionaires every day

there's also tons of people who used to have 8 figures and are now trying to leverage debt to get out of bankruptcy, which is at least a fun play to watch. like you kind of find yourself rooting for them now matter how dumb the plan is

You do in the Hamptons brother. Or in Palm Beach. I'm telling you there are places like this where self-made millionaires are the proles. Lot of prole millionaires in the Hamptons brother. Who own the shitty homes no one wants. It's all about scale and magnitude brother. If you are Howard Stern you have prole neighbors who suck and bother you. They might be 10 football fields away, but they're still there, in a house 99% of people could never afford. And Stern is to some billionaire finance Jew a pimple. A nuisance. A bothersome prole with No Money. They laugh at these types. Once you Have billions everything changes. A guy with 200mm is a turd to you. A Loser. Everyone with a billion dollars thinks a guy with 200 million is a Loser.

What are you talking about? There is nobody on Earth who doesn't want more money. And what I'm trying to tell you is that the people who have the most also want more money more than regular people do. You have no idea. They covet money more than you or I could possibly imagine. I have met billionaires. The thought of making more money makes them more excited than anything that could ever happen to you or I. They are OBSESSED with making more, as they are obsessed with owning things and owning people.

There is 1 thing that 100% of psychotically rich billionaires all agree on and that's that having more money makes you better than other people. They all acknowledge this.

They have definitely been re-wired. I think it's such an unnatural state to be in you start to view yourself as a God. They all think they're living Gods and they all are under no illusion that the source of their power is money and that money is the source of all power (to them, perhaps not everyone).

They definitely understand money. I think they struggle to understand other people. They understand that having money let's them have all of this comfort and unattainable luxury, and makes them de facto stars of their own social circle. I think they understand that with money you don't have to have a lot of things that other people have to have in order to count for something and have a nice life. With money you can simply have all the things you want and not really ever have to grow or change or overcome anything. You don't have to be beautiful when you're rich. You don't have to be smart or interesting. You're just rich. That's the point. You've got it and others don't and that dynamic follows you everywhere all the time. And these people typically don't blossom into fully formed people. Most of them don't.

No one who is rich thinks the problem is that they're rich. They love everything about being rich. What haunts them is every aspect of life that isn't transactional. It's everything that you can't buy that vexes them.

What's weird to me is the billionaires like Trump or Charles Schwab wanting even more billions, to the point of grifting and insider trading and pumping and dumping the market to take people's retirement money. Makes no sense. Nobody needs 13 billion dollars instead of 11 billion dollars.

But at that point, it's probably more about power and ego than any material goods.

The guy with 11 billion envies the guy with 13 billion more than a guy who makes 50k envies a guy who makes 250k even though that amount of money would completely alter his life. I am saying this from first hand knowledge here. I have been told this by one of the world's richest 100 people. He said he was personally envious of everyone richer than him.

I'm over $10M and don't work anymore. I do whatever is interesting to me, whether it makes money or not. What's the point? I can do whatever I want for the next fifty or so years.

5 million isn't much these days. That said, if I had 5 million liquid I'd be happy. I could get a UMC home somewhere with more land, work a part time job and have an OK life.

If I were a billionaire, I don't know what I'd do with all that money - there's not that much I want to buy. Maybe start some kind of nonprofit for animals. Dunno.

If you can't imagine being a billionaire you have nowhere near what it takes to become one. Any self made billionaire is someone who was born with an immense amount of greed from a young age and extraordinary desire to get ahead of other people at all costs. Of course if you had a billion dollars you wouldn't know what to do, but they do. What they do is they covet things. They find a way to want more. They take care of everyone they care about to the absolute max. They obsess over collecting rare and valuable things. They covet what other billionaires have and try and outdo them. They yearn more than we do. They covet things we would find silly. They find meaning in owning stuff and surround themselves with people who admire people who own fancy things.

Yeah I'm talking about NY financemos.

I've never personally met a tech billionaire. But they seem to be weird in other ways. Zuck seems totally insane. He wanted to be a futurist and then that didn't work out and now he wants to be a normal guy, but also like a wigger.

I think the main thing that haunts Zuck is that he never had a great idea after the first one. All the other innovators have much better storylines of self reinvention. You're right he just got insanely lucky that his random website was worth billions. He never did anything of value again.
