Surprised Chinese student numbers haven't dropped by 75%, might be because they didn't intend to immigrate permanently

International students studying in the US can gain working experience through the popular Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows them to work both during and after their studies.

The OPT is a temporary employment program for F-1 students, allowing up to 12 months of authorization before and after their academic studies, with pre-completion OPT periods deducted from the available post-completion OPT period.

STEM OPT is a 24-month extension of OPT for foreign students with STEM degrees. One needs an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to start working under OPT program.

In 2024, 194,554 foreign students obtained work authorization through OPT, 95,384 through STEM OPT, and 130,586 through CPT.

I want to see NEW students compared to last year. B/c as mentioned in this paragraph, a lot aren't traveling back home as they usually do during summer break.

"Part of the decrease in arrivals might have been caused by more international students remaining in the US over the summer rather than returning home and risking visa challenges upon re-entry."

it would suck for universities to lose all of these full tuition students and have to increase tuition for the remaining americans

OPT is huge

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme is a vital channel for international students to gain work experience in the US. Nearly 200,000 foreign students took part in 2024, with another 95,000 using its STEM extension. That future is now in doubt.
