That's the only origin story of the gospels that makes any sense. Back then, becoming literate meant studying ancient Greek works, then producing new works written in that same style of Greek. It was a highly skilled profession. The gospels would have been something equivalent to a very extensive legal research memo prepared by a well trained associate. It's not something the associate would do unless he was hired to do it, or he he was donating his time, or some combination of the two. It may have been a kind of apprenticeship, like a PhD thesis.

In any case, for each gospel, the chain of events probably went: some rich dood/committee orders someone to go and document what the fuck these Christians believe --> "gospel" is produced that's tailored to inform that audience. Some audiences may want to know more about how this dood relates to King David, others may be less interested in that part.
