I still miss Fry's. I used to go the Fry's in Palo Alto on Saturday morning and bump into many men I knew, most of whom were shopping for computer parts. Hardly any women in those days. Then I frequented the one in Tempe until it closed. Sad day. The closest thing to it might be Harbor Freight. Different stuff, but a "guy" store, more or less. Where else can you go for the emergency purchase of a 3 Ton Super Heavy Duty Long Ram Flat Bottom Hydraulic Jack for $60? I have used it once so far, but when I needed it, I really needed it.

I used to live a couple blocks from the Fry's in Palo Alto. Sometimes I would walk over there on weekends just to browse all the weird shit they sold. It was basically Disneyland for autistic nerds.

Was the whole store just about Engineering? I remember rows and rows of “bins” with things on them.

As time went by they seemed to have more and more consumer electronics/appliance stuff. In the old days a lot of the store was component level electronics. They had a nice selection. Not as comprehensive as the Allied Radio catalog, but a lot.

My recollection was that they had an impressive supply of both consumer electronics and components. If you wanted to build a computer from scratch, they had all the parts you needed. But I could also buy a laptop (or a fan or a refrigerator) there.

I discussed opening a Record Store to employ otherwise homeless Gen Xers in the event of a 10-figure lottery payout and the board laughed at me 😔
