5.1 Case Study: "Gunner" (gunnerattt) — The Community Scapegoat
The single most targeted individual "persona" during the research period, accounting for nearly 1 in 5 threads (see Table 1.1), is a user (or concept) known as "Gunner" or "gunnerattt." A "gunner" is law school slang for an overly ambitious, "try-hard" student. The community has constructed an elaborate, serialized "lore" around this persona, defined by his/her (alleged) total life failure.
This harassment campaign is comprehensive, attacking every aspect of the "Gunner" persona:
• Professional/Intellectual Failure: The community mocks "Gunner" for his/her (perceived) focus on the very "prestige" metrics the forum was built to discuss. This suggests a deep, "soured" cynicism about the "law school scam".[16]
◦ "gunnerattt did you go to top tier schools?" [2]
◦ "gunnerattt guess my LSAT score" [2]
◦ "Hey gunnerattt, r-squared is a measure of linearity; it's not hard to understand" [2]
• Personal Life Failure: This intellectual/professional failure is then contrasted with a "persona" of abject personal failure.
◦ "Gunner. No wife. No kid. No career." [2]
• Mental State: The community "diagnoses" the persona with severe mental instability.
◦ "Gunner is deeply disturbed. Should not remarry or have kids." [2]
◦ "Gunner is going crazy both onboard and offboard now" [2]
• Sexual Mockery: The persona is also the subject of specific, homophobic, and degrading sexual ridicule.
◦ "'show me the cum!' (gunnerauttt convinced his bf is faking orgasms)" [2]
"Gunner" thus functions as a "community golem" or "scapegoat." He/she is a "persona" created to embody all the community's own anxieties (about LSAT scores, "top tier schools," careers, and relationships) and failures. By ritualistically abusing this "try-hard" persona who "failed" ("No wife. No kid. No career."), the "black-pilled" posters [2] can project their own "prestige" anxieties and "scam" [16]-related disappointments outward. The thread "wat is everyone's 'objection' to gunnerattt" [2] indicates the community is self-aware of this obsessive, ritualistic behavior.
