Just like Nintendo and Sony, Nikon and Canon insist on using proprietary software that they control. If the software isn't very user friendly, oh well. Your $5,000 Canon digital camera has a digital menu layout that's cluttered, unintuitive, low res and poorly translated from Japanese? It's ok, you're used to it.
Now imagine the same device is running Android or Ubuntu, or even WebOS. Imagine anyone can develop for this thing, anywhere in the world. Users can do whatever as well. No limits. That was all it took to finish off Japanese companies in this sector.
