The reason I find it so effective is that it’s like a magic trick. Right before your eyes the entire frame of reality/reference shifts. I also think it works well as a creepy horror story. He kind of does it in Gas Station Carnivals too but it’s a little more telegraphed.
I haven’t read Medusa or Tsalal in forever so forget what happens.
I also really like Purity which is again sort of an outlier in some ways—it’s much more “realistic”. It all comes down to that final line which is a great punchline that somehow makes perfect sense and ties it all up without actually following. It’s satisfying on a subconscious level; like Aickman or Campbell.
Have you ever read the William Sansom story “A Woman Seldom Found?” Not exactly relevant to what we are discussing but it’ll take you 3 minutes to read
