then COVID became the largest health crisis since AIDS. so he diligently worked behind the scenes to create the false impression it was a bat virus and he denied denied denied about gain of function. amazingly it worked and presumably will work for the rest of his natural life.
but it's guaranteed that in the fullness of time everyone will acknowledge that COVID was a gain-of-function lab leak catastrophe. and it's caused incalculable damage to the world's trust in science.
