They never had a resurgence after the 90s. Most pop bands had some kind of comeback even if it’s an ironic one like Creed and Korn. But you never hear Gen Z or alpha kids talking about their music or using their songs in clips. What happened?

There are quite a few Gen X bands out there with young fans like Deftones and Slowdive. Maybe it’s the shoegaze sound

Deftones get a URM boost, isn't the singer a beaner? Never heard of Slowdrive, probably some niche fan base.

The band members are gen x. So was their original fan base. Millenials were like middle school age when white pony dropped.

it's a good question, they just seem kind of whiny without a lot of oomph and didn't have a real point to their music. other alternative rock took over from what they were doing and did it a lot better. Live still gets played literally every day on rock radio.

i never understood how they got so big. they were ahead of their time, but still just a mediocre indie band, a couple of hits aside.

they were never an arena rock band like U2, who were absorbed into the 'classic rock' pantheon, nor an 'alt rock' band, so they kind slipped through the cracks.

people don't even know The Replacements ever existed either.

It doesn't matter whether "people" now talk about or know about the Replacements or R.E.M. They still were great 80s bands-- R.E.M. was pretty unique when they came out and influenced a lot of bands. The 'Mats were similar. Popularity of rock bands with the general public does not equate to quality.

In other words, I like both bands. Shut the fuck up

Their decline started before nostalgia could rescue them. Bill berry leaving in 1997 was a big part of this.
