Harvey Danger had One Song but it was pretty good. One hit wonders make me sad because you always have to wonder what would have been if they had TWO hits.
The Verve were geniuses whose entire career was derailed by a Jew accountant who successfully stole millions from them and I think that broke the main guy spiritually.
Verve Pipe another one hit wonder but it incredible. Sad they never got bigger they were really talented but could never put it all together.
Live - Throwing Copper is a 10/10 album
Eve 6 classic radio hit but not very influential. Semisonic did it better. Great makeout song though.
Taproot - many others did this style better but I guess if you were a Korn diehard or you couldn't get Mushroom tickets you would inevitably go see them. Probably pretty cool at the time. White rage peaked in the 90s Gen X was so scummy. This music was for seducing trailer trash white women in the 90s. Vaya con dios.
The Roots? Jfc no

It's a piss poor life
When the ladies fire you up
And then you check their oil and know you're fucked
'Cause no one wants a loser
Who works for five an hour
Smells like gas, looks like shit
Works in the rain and rude as hell

I think of Muse as two distinct bands. There is before and after they made The Resistance.
imo Showbiz 6.5/10 - This is not their best work but it's really goofy and energetic and somehow enjoyable.
Origin of Symmetry 8/10 - I love Bliss, New Born, Citizen Erased, Feeling Good, Plug In Baby, Micro Cuts. Really unique, original record.
Absolution - incredible record 9/10 even though I prefer OOS more. Time is Running Out, Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Sing for Absolution, Blackout, Stockholm Syndrome, Apocalypse Please. So many bangers.
Black Holes and Revelations 10/10 record front to back. Only 1-2 weak songs mostly all bangers.
Then the made The Resistance it's cheesy af I didn't care for it personally but admittedly there are some good songs on here. It just feels like the band changed so much and they started working with hip hop producers and shit. I began to not care about them after this. 2nd Law was not great but somehow significantly less bad that what would follow. Madness is still a keeper somehow. Then there's Drones and beyond I never listened to that crap except Mercy is a decent single but I almost never listen to it. Not sure how or why they kept going writing garbage like they did.

Wrong Way is greatest song ever written about trafficking minors. The lyrics are hilarious. There's absolutely no way libs would allow this today. Sublime makes libs irate.
You don't think Santeria is tuneful? The songs are very melodic imo.

ITT: Poaster claims MFE level knowledge of 90s alternative rock and then raves about Limp Bizkit and shrugs about Janes Addiction ("they seem kind of okay, idk. I have heard of Jane Says i guess").
Lmao. Stick to TRL era music, breh. You have no capacity to rate Gen X shit. No slight against you. Youre just too young

im not criticizing Turbo's taste at all. And upon second glacne I see the thread title is like "90s-2010 alternative".
But I read it as 1990-2000, and I think most people associate "alternative rock" with that decade.
So loving Limp Bizkit and not really knowing Janes was just a huge tell that he came of age when he did, and 99% of the bands named above he would not really know, or would google in the moment.
Nothing *wrong* with being whatever age you are. I would have to google 70s bands, or would write things like "Yeah I know one T. Rex song".
But Janes Addiction is emblematic because they spearheaded the Gen-X "alternative" moment for a few years, not least through Lollapalooza drawing connecting points between shoegazers, greasy haired grungers, rappers, etc etc. Not to mention birthing other momentous things like Lilith Fair, assorted hippie festivals, re-booting Woodstock, etc.
I wouldnt begrudge anyone hating Janes, even tho I like 3 of their albums a lot. But they must be confronted one way or another if youre writing about 90s alternative rock.
So seeing them get only a slight nod and mention of their only radio song just told me that OP came of age much later.
And tbf, old af people like me hated Limp Bizkit and Korn and such. I myself hate those bands. Im sure it has less to do with their merits as it does with age. It was what emerged when our heroes were dead or washed. No doubt hardcore Motley Crue fans fucking hate Nirvana for the same reason.
Anyway, I am not knocking OP and my post was written inelegantly. But I guarantee he didnt see high school till the late 90s. And the massive influx of alt bands in the early 90s meant little to him because of this

imo they have 2-3 albums' worth of fantastic material if you culled the noise and trash off all their records.
very influential, but i rarely listen to them. daydream nation, goo, dirty and washing machine are really great. murray street is good too.
i saw them open for wilco in 2003 and they blew wilco off the stage.

i rarely, and i mean i've done it a handful of times ever, listen to a SY album in full.
i appreciate what they did for music, but they just aren't all that good to my ears. like i said, if you took their best material, you'd have 2-3 stellar albums though.
i like that they got a blank check from geffen to do whatever for like 15 years because they found nirvana for the label.

Damn, I’m a little surprised to see this basic bitch take from you. Early Sonic Youth is the noise trimming exercise, but still has many awesome highs that are wild to consider relative to the rest of punk and alternative rock at the time, and in some cases a higher hit rate than that eg Sister is still peppered with bangers. But Daydream Nation is legendary for how it all flows together and achieves cohesion and there’s as little fat to trim as in about any landmark record of any punk and indie HOF level act.

naming a genre "altnerative" always bugged me ans this thread shows why -- almost all the rock from this era is "alternative'
some with indie when that was a dominant genre and they were all signed to major labels

College rock was probably a better term.
The Minutemen, Replacements, That Petrol Emotion, etc. were not getting played on AOR stations in the 1980s.
But in the 90s you could hear some of the bands above on stations like WMMR (Philly). Others not so much. I don't think rock radio was playing Yo La Tengo or Guided By Voices.
Alternative Country is a legit genre, however.

This is a tough one. I would say they're somehow both properly rated and overrated at the same time. They started off as a popular boy band that got really famous for looking cool and being from New York. I think largely as songwriters they were not the best. It was a lot more about the fashion and the identity than the music.
However, they were one of the biggest rock bands of their era and they did have at least one massive single. They were not completely talentless hacks. They just didn't write a lot of great songs and were always more famous than their actual output.
Still they deserve consideration and I believe that they will get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame based on their fame alone.

I was a really big fan. Their first two records were fire. I remember playing Lazy Eye in a guitar shop once on some guitar off the wall and a kyoot hapa hipster chick was floored. She ditched her boyfriend to cum watch me strum it and was in awe. This guy got really jealous and huffed and puffed. Or maybe I'm remembering it wrong. Maybe he was playing Lazy Eye and I was just flirtin' haha who remembers?
I also liked Swoon I thought it had 3 great singles. Panic Switch was really peak alt rock/pop. But my favorite track was Substitution. Just really liked his strained voice and the melodies on this. It's also a captivating, unusual melody. Brian really knew how to write a banger. There weren't many alt rock bands making big hits in minor keys with heavy guitars at this time. They owned that space for a while.
But Neck of the Woods was a let down and you could sense it was the end of Great Songwriting. I couldn't listen to that record and I felt like the jig was up. I don't know what they've done since then but I think they just disappeared.

CR.
I think Neck was pretty good but still a step down from the prior stuff. The albums after that were poor and only had a few interesting songs.
Still a fun band to see live.

They were your favorite angry white man's favorite angry white man band.
They blew people away with "OMG white people are doing blues records now! Whites have SOUL!"
I think ultimately they were properly rated as a niche blues rock act with a cult following but I can't put them higher than that. The songs never struck me as anything I'd want to go back and listen to on repeat in the long run.

Kurt was a genius of geniuses. He was one of the most creative people who ever lived. He didn't just write songs he created a whole universe. He didn't just make art he lived it. I don't think he ever wrote a single song in a major key. He may have written the most negative hits of anyone in history. His entire discography is a downer and I don't think people bring that up enough. It's extremely unusual to almost never write a song in a major key and I can't think of another artist who did. In Bloom is almost in a major key but it's not, really. Kurt had the most negative energy of any star ever. And he wrote so many hits it's insane. Almost all of his songs are famous classics. What more can be said about him? He was a very weird guy and his death launched him to another level of infamy. He wasn't playing the same game as the rest of humanity.
Pixies were great they were the first band to write pop songs with a grunge theme. They will always be the first movers in grunge pop. But in the long run they weren't incredible songwriters. They should be in the rock hall of fame and it's stupid that they're not.
Pearl Jam is one of the greatest bands ever to write almost entirely in 1 4 5 progressions. Nearly all of their songs recycle the same chords over and over again. They were brilliant tunesmiths and deserve a lot of credit. But they also took the grunge sound and turned it into really cheesy pop music. They are sort of like The Eagles or something. I personally can listen to it but would often prefer not to. I'm not a hater but also not a die hard fan. I think they add something to the overall tapestry of grunge. What would life have been like without Pearl Jam? They will always just kind of be there in the background, for Gen Xers to delight over. They also have REALLY LONG INTROS.

tyft on pearl jam. ive always felt like some sort of hipster contrarian among grunge fans for thinking they're just ok. like a food critic who orders well done steak. like i get their contribution to the genre. im not a music scholar so i could never put my finger on why, but your scholarship makes sense because they do "feel" like the eagles of grunge to me. it sounds manufactured and eddie vetter always sounds like hes overacting to me. like william shatner where an over-the-top parody is impossible.
pixies is tragic. they came a little too earlier and wound up getting chewed up and spit out by a record industry that was still demanding timely records regardless of quality. frank black is a genius but also an egomaniac so it didnt take much pressure for the band to collapse.
if you haven't watched it you should check out the doc on them. the other two members aside from kim are complete goobers and lucked assbackards in rock history. one was working as a magician/ventriloquist before they reunited lol

I did see the doc it was pretty sad. Agreed the guitarist was a no show but still has one of the most famous riffs in grunge history.
To be clear about PJ they are extremely talented and they were very creative within a limited canvass. They could write hooks for days. But they did nothing but cover the same territory over and over. They're not bad at all, but they do have a lot of haters because how many times can you listen to the Same Song.
A Gen Xer I know loves PJ and The Eagles as the greatest ever so it makes sense that they would appeal to the same types of people. A lot of professional musicians hate on PJ though because it's a really limited box of tools to draw from.

Jean Rasczak: You.
Carmen: They wouldn't say anything. Napster was destroyed.
Jean Rasczak: Correct. Needless litigation has resolved more conflicts throughout history than any other factor. The contrary opinion, that litigation doesn't solve anything, is wishful thinking at its worst; people who forget that always get sued.

Song 2 is one of the greatest pop rock songs ever written. It's a song that when lesser bands (Image Dragons) play at their show it's the best part of the show.
That being said most of the rest of their stuff was twee and not very good. If you listen to their other hits they're not very good. Beetlebum, Park Life, Girls and Boys.. These songs kind of suck. They were primarily super famous for being young and good looking in the UK at the start of the Britpop craze of the 90s. They were a boy band and not very talented.
I think Damon redeemed himself with Gorillaz though and showed he could truly write well when pressed. In some ways he surpassed Graham and the gang. Bottom line Oasis mogged the shit out of Blur.
One thing a lot of people don't realize is some bands get really huge just because the members are really attractive. And it skews history and people's memories. Being Hot is a huge advantage. So when you say how good was Blur do you mean how hot were they on magazine covers in the 90s? Very. But their music was mostly pretty bad.
